They work behind the scenes, lobbying politicians to represent their interests. From tobacco companies, to energy companies, from anti~abortion campaigners to civil rights campaigners, the list is vast. And nowhere is their influence more keenly felt than on the issue of the Middle East. Israel is America's key ally in the Middle East, and helps maintain U.S. dominance in the region. This book shows how pro~Israeli lobbyists and domestic interest groups have been hugely successful in creating government and financial support for Israel. By contrast, Arab~American groups and Arab governments have had less success putting forward their agendas. Janice J. Terry shows how special interest groups work, and why certain lobbying techniques are more effective than others. She sets this within the wider cultural context, showing how the U.S. media~and the general public~view the Middle East. To explain how lobbies work, Terry draws on case studies including the Sinai accords and Camp David under Presidents Ford and Carter, the Conflict between Greek and Turkish lobbies over Cyprus, and the major campaign against the Arab boycott. Making use of primary sources, and unpublished material from various presidential libraries, this is a fascinating expose of the role that lobby groups really play in determining U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. It will be of interest to students of American politics and Middle East studies.

KPD. spartacists. walter rathenau. bela kun. rosa luxemburg. brest~litovsk treaty. ~ The period immediately following the First World War was one of great turbulence in German society. There was widespread unrest and unemployment. Morale was crushed. The Allies' demands for reparations crippled the national economy. Russia had been taken over by the Bolsheviks and many believed that Germany would be next to fall to revolution. Writing between 1919 and 1923 as special correspondent for the Daily Herald, Morgan Philips Price, who had reported on the Bolshevik Revolution for the Manchester Guardian, was one of the relatively few foreign journalists in Weimar Germany during these eventful years. He recorded what he saw with an objective eye but his sympathy with the left gave him an understanding of the deeper implications behind the unfolding of events. These vivid and remarkable writings ~ both dispatches and contemporary diary entries ~ now reprinted for the first time in eighty years ~ cover the formative events in postwar Germany. Price witnesses the establishment of the Weimar Republic, reports on the signing of the Versailles Treaty, which he characterises as a blatant and excessive retribution, and describes the emergence of Hitler and the Nazi Party. Price transports us into the heat of the moment, whether covering street riots, the pulse and atmosphere of the time, or reporting his interviews and encounters with leading protagonists, such as Rosa Luxemburg, Gustav Stresemann, Ernst Seidl or the head of the British Military Mission in Berlin, General Sir Neil Malcolm. Price's eyewitness accounts offer a unique sense of living through this crucial period of modern history. Tania Rose's lucid introduction and linking passages provide the necessary context and valuable background reading. Morgan Philips Price's writings for the Manchester Guardian won him wide acclaim. He also reported for the Daily Herald, and the New York Herald Tribune, and was the author of ten books. His Dispatches from the Revolution: Russia 1916~18 was published by Pluto Press in 1997. Tania Rose is Price's daughter. She has had a long and varied career, working in government service for the Ministry of Information in the Second World War, the Commission for Racial Equality, and as a screen writer. Now retired, she devotes her time to historical research.

Looks at the variety of ways in which we appear to learn about good and evil arguing that in the family, school, workplace and media we are being relentlessly schooled in a particular way of seeing, thinking and behaving and that the choice between heroism and villainy is illusionary. Schostak argues that this has been recently demonstrated in the experience of the Gulf War, but that it is equally visible in the attacks on social welfare and education in both the US and Europe.

'In Capitalism in the 21st Century, the authors show how Marx's law of value explains numerous issues in our modern world. In both advanced economies and the periphery, value theory provides a piercing analytical framework through which we can approach topics as varied as labour, profitability, automation and AI, the environment, nature and ecology, the role of China, imperialism and the state. This is an ambitious work that will appeal to both heterodox economists and labour movement activists alike, as it demonstrates the ongoing contemporary relevance of Marxist theory to current trends in political economy.' ix+270 pages. 6.2 x 9.25 inches.
