Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This compelling collection tells five stories of young Australian women who served in times of armed conflict in early twentieth-century China. These courageous missionaries lived in the midst of pre-Boxer uprisings, the Republican revolution, clashes between regional warlords, Japanese occupation during World War II, and civil war between Nationalists and Communists. Suffering deprivation and hardship with the Chinese people, they were shot at and bombed, endured capture and imprisonment, and risked their lives to save others. Some were even killed. Working in villages, hospitals, schools, universities, orphanages, and refugee centers, these women helped shape the emergence of modern China. In partnership with local people they helped raise the status of women and develop educational, medical, and welfare institutions that exist to this day. Based on thorough first-hand research, visits to various sites in China, and including a number of historic photos, this book is written for anyone interested in the lives of people who made a difference to the world around them. 146 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Even in the twenty-first century, critical and creative engagement with modern and postmodern philosophy is still a rarity in Orthodox circles. This collection of essays makes a contribution to overcoming this deficit. Eight scholars from six different countries, working on the intersection between Orthodox thought and philosophy, present their research in short and accessible essays. The range of topics spans from political philosophy to phenomenology, metaphysics, philosophy of self, logic, ethics, and philosophy of language. This book does not promote one particular approach to the relationship between Orthodox theology and philosophy. Yet all authors demonstrate that Orthodox scholarship is not confined to historical research about the Byzantine era, but that it can contribute to, and enrich, contemporary intellectual debates. 196 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -What is the Good Life Learn from some of the greatest minds in Greek, Jewish, and Christian thought. Comparing their thought reveals a new apex reached in the age-old question concerning the relationship of Jerusalem and Athens, faith and reason. Few have been more influential in Judaism and Christianity than Moses Maimonides and Thomas Aquinas, yet Aristotle influenced them both in significant ways. By adopting and adapting some of Aristotle's best thinking, we can appreciate Maimonides' and Aquinas' search for the Good Life from their respective views, ranging from the fall to human perfectibility. This examines human nature, the human telos, and how each would prescribe the route to the Good Life. For all three, it is ultimately about the knowledge of God. But what does that mean The comparative approach is more illuminating than if considered in isolation. Comparatively, Aristotle's approach may be characterized as informational, Maimonides' as instructional, and Aquinas' as pneumatic-relational. The role of faith as a virtue in both Maimonides and Aquinas makes a substantive difference over Aristotle's in philosophical and practical ways. It is used to exploit their accounts of the human fall, moral perfection, and ultimate human perfection--the knowledge of God. 216 pp. Englisch.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Good poetry is like a good painting: the more you linger over it, the more it reveals. It is a deep well that never runs dry. And that is why the Psalter, like a good painting, keeps giving. In the last four decades, Psalms scholarship has found remarkable fruitfulness in reading the Psalter as a book--that is, in reading the Psalms as a unified composition with a metanarrative across its 150 poems. Pivotal questions associated with this approach really boil down to two questions--how and why How are individual psalms sequenced, if at all, and what is the design logic behind that macrostructure This volume seeks to answer those questions. In essence, the Psalter unfurls the story of the Davidic covenant. While interest in the editing of the Psalter remains high in recent Psalms scholarship, this interest has not led to clear consensus. The specific and timely contribution of this volume is twofold. First, it consolidates the results of studies on groups of psalms. Second, it integrates poetic and thematic approaches that are typically separated in Psalms scholarship. Readers will find results of this study surprising and their implications sobering. 412 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Various cross-textual readings have been attempted between the Christian Bible and Chinese literature. Using cross-textual hermeneutics, this study centers on the political wisdom of Ecclesiastes and the Analects, and its goal is to demonstrate that both texts offer wisdom pointers for human survival amid uncertain sociopolitical realities. Chapter 1 introduces the vibrant interaction of biblical wisdom literature within the ancient Near East and highlights some of its political connections. The openness of wisdom literature is then proposed to support this present effort of cross-textual research. Chapter 2 offers readings of eight passages that communicate Qoheleth's political wisdom in Ecclesiastes. Chapter 3 centers on the Analects and on some notable passages that relate to Confucius' political ideas. Chapter 4 seeks to demonstrate the dialogical dynamics between the two works by exploring specific hermeneutical connections. In conclusion, readers will come to understand the distinctive and collective political insights of both wisdom texts. That is, this study suggests contextualized ideas for living wisely from within both a faith tradition and a native tradition. 228 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Recently, the immanent Trinity (God as in himself) has been criticized as abstract and impractical as opposed to the economic Trinity (God in relation to the world). Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume seeks to guide students in religious or literary studies or other interested readers toward understanding and appreciation of biblical prophetic poetry. Each of the three sections of the book includes a chapter examining one of the literary features with brief examples from prophetic texts, followed by another chapter of applied criticism of a full prophetic poem (Joel 2 on parallelism, Jeremiah 4 on voice, and Isaiah 24 on design). Among the distinct features of the book are diagrams of parallel lines, promoting two-dimensional, ''binocular'' reading of the poems.Of all the literature of the Bible, prophetic poetry has probably been least accessible to the modern reader. Language is dense, images are obscure, and logical development of ideas seems almost inaccessible. Reading Prophetic Poetry seeks to help readers appreciate the luminous beauty of the language and the austere power and surprising relevance of the ideas in these relatively obscure biblical texts. It introduces an accessible approach to prophetic poetry which invites readers to turn to the biblical texts on their own with new ideas for appreciating the riches of these ancient poems. 268 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Greening the Children of God uncovers the theological roots of the growing ethical imperative to reconnect children to their natural environment. Theologians emphasize the sacramental nature of embedding our lives in creation. Environmental educators emphasize knowledge of local biology. Psychologists emphasize the morally pro-formative experience of care between biodiverse creatures. Together they affirm that knowing their place in the natural environment helps a child develop an intersubjective 'ecological' identity that nurtures virtues of mutuality and care. During the Scientific Revolution this ethical harmony was threatened as science and moral theology began to adopt different epistemological methods. Seventeenth-century Anglican priest and poet Thomas Traherne was prescient of the consequences of this divorce and insisted that education should promote a child's attention to the moral dimensions woven into 'the tapestry of creation.' Traherne professed that play, wonder, and a sensory relationship to diverse creatures play a pedagogical role in a child's moral formation. Greening the Children of God establishes the contemporary significance of Traherne's moral theory in conversation with child psychologists, educators, philosophers, and theologians who know that cultivating a place-based relationship to the local ecology helps children perceive creation's deep mutuality and develop a moral identity in the image of a caring Creator. 276 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The nature and role of positive law has largely been neglected in recent Protestant theology and social ethics. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law introduces and critically summarizes a tradition in Continental Protestant thought about human law, drawing on writings of Barth, Brunner, Ellul, Thielicke, Wolf, Pannenberg, Huber, and Kre¿, many of which have not been translated into English. The book argues that law is an essential political and social institution within developed societies, one that is normative and dependent on an encompassing vision of justice but that also necessarily reflects the contemporary pluralism of those societies. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law argues that theological and ethical perspectives on positive law developed by Protestant thinkers have a place in reflection on positive law, provided they are conceived and expressed in a manner appropriately respectful of the diversity of contemporary opinion regarding the expression of religious perspectives in the public arena. 276 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The first Gospel has traditionally been considered a very Jewish work. Recent scholarship has suggested some Hellenistic influence. The issue is explored in this work with attention focused on the dream narratives of the first two chapters. An investigation is carried out using a new methodology. The memory techniques used in an oral or semi-literate society are explored. A search is made for such techniques in Matthew and these are then compared with similar devices in a wide range of literature, Old Testament, contemporary Jewish, Greek and Roman. The intention is that literary practice should help to clarify the cultural setting in which Matthew functions. This is a work which will interest New Testament scholars with a focus on Gospel studies and oral transmission. It may also appeal to some classical scholars or those with a specialized interest in Josephus. 286 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -George MacDonald (1824-1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical unease. In a society ravaged by Asiatic cholera, numbed by levels of infant mortality, and fearful of revolution and the toxicity of industry (to name but a few of the many challenges), the ''gospel'' proclaiming eternal damnation for unbelievers was hardly good news; rather, Christianity was increasingly viewed as the source of bad news and a tool of state oppression. MacDonald agreed: in his view, the church had become a vampire sucking the blood of her children instead of offering them eucharistic life.In contrast, like Christ, MacDonald brings before us a child. Although at first sight a familiar Romantic incarnation, in MacDonald's theology ''the child'' becomes an unlikely icon challenging the vampire's kingdom--a challenge reaching beyond the confines of Evangelicalism, confronting the foundations of much of Western theology. This meticulously-researched study exploring MacDonald's work--especially his ''realist'' and fantasy novels--in the light of its Victorian context is of more than historical interest. His incisive critique of church and empire have particular relevance today in light of the growing and troubling alliance between fundamentalist expressions of church and intolerant, right-wing politics. This volume considers MacDonald's radical solution to religious vampirism; becoming children. 292 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Pelagian Controversy (411-431) was one of the most important theological controversies in the history of Christianity. It was a bitter and messy affair in the evening of the Roman Empire that addressed some of the most important questions that we ask about ourselves: Who are we What does it mean to be a human being Are we good, or are we evil Are we burdened by an uncontrollable impulse to sin Do we have free will It was comprised by a group of men who were some of the greatest thinkers of Late Antiquity, such as Augustine, Jerome, John Cassian, Pelagius, Caelestius, and Julian of Eclanum. These men were deeply immersed in the rich Roman literary and intellectual traditions of that time, and they, along with many other great minds of this period, tried to create equally rich Christian literary and intellectual traditions. This controversy--which is usually of interest only to historians and theologians of Christianity--should be appreciated by a wide audience because it was the primary event that shaped the way Christians came to understand the human person for the next 1,600 years. It is still relevant today because anthropological questions continue to haunt our public discourse. 368 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The cultural landscape plays a momentous role in the transmission of Christianity. Consequently, the global expansion of the church has led to the increasing diversification of world Christianity. As a result, scholars are turning more and more to native cultures as the point of focus. This study examines how this new discourse evolved as well as presenting a missional methodology based on the study of the native landscapes of Korea. Kale Yu argues that the process of formulating and communicating Christianity was less consistent than is usually supposed. By immersing the reader in the thought and lived experience of various Korean contexts, Professor Yu recreates the diversity of cultural landscapes experienced by Korean Christians of different periods in history. The result is a new interpretation of cross-cultural missional interactions. 330 pp. Englisch. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Lukan narrative takes its readers into God's story: how his salvation plan in Jesus began on the slopes of Judea and at the Sea of Galilee, ending on the hill of Calvary and the Mount of Olives, yet moving on and telling how the Spirit descended onto the Temple Mount empowering God's people, who then began to fulfill the given mandate in the presence of the Spirit. Yet, readers of Luke-Acts, throughout the centuries, have had a meandering journey as they have tried to understand the narrative's persuasion and Spirit-references. This book seeks to bring awareness to these challenges by some of the most respected Pentecostal biblical scholars and systematicians. Here their vigorous labor with the questions of hermeneutics and theology in relation to Lukan writings have come to fruition. These contributions have been collected as a Festschrift in honor and celebration of the career of Roger Stronstad, a Pentecostal biblical scholar whose contribution to Lukan studies have moved Pentecostal scholarship from shadows into daylight. The editor of this volume invites the readers of Lukan narrative to journey together on the road to Emmaus, as we continue to ponder the events in the past, the present, and the future. 352 pp. Englisch.…

Reading Prophetic Poetry seeks to help readers appreciate the luminous beauty of the language and the austere power and surprising relevance of the ideas in these relatively obscure biblical texts. It introduces an accessible approach to prophetic poetry which invites readers to turn to the biblical texts on their own with new ideas for appreciating the riches of these ancient poems.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 268 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The nature and role of positive law has largely been neglected in recent Protestant theology and social ethics. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law argues that theological and ethical perspectives on positive law developed by Protestant thinkers have a place in reflection on positive law, provided they are conceived and expressed in a manner appropriately respectful of the diversity of contemporary opinion regarding the expression of religious perspectives in the public arena.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 276 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Greening the Children of God uncovers the theological roots of the growing ethical imperative to reconnect children to their natural environment. Greening the Children of God establishes the contemporary significance of Traherne's moral theory in conversation with child psychologists, educators, philosophers, and theologians who know that cultivating a place-based relationship to the local ecology helps children perceive creation's deep mutuality and develop a moral identity in the image of a caring Creator.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 276 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The first Gospel has traditionally been considered a very Jewish work. It may also appeal to some classical scholars or those with a specialized interest in Josephus.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 286 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -George MacDonald (1824-1905) was writing at a time of Evangelical unease. This volume considers MacDonald's radical solution to religious vampirism; becoming children.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 292 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The Pelagian Controversy (411-431) was one of the most important theological controversies in the history of Christianity. It is still relevant today because anthropological questions continue to haunt our public discourse.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 368 pp. Englisch.…

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The cultural landscape plays a momentous role in the transmission of Christianity. The result is a new interpretation of cross-cultural missional interactions.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 330 pp. Englisch. …

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Lukan narrative takes its readers into God's story: how his salvation plan in Jesus began on the slopes of Judea and at the Sea of Galilee, ending on the hill of Calvary and the Mount of Olives, yet moving on and telling how the Spirit descended onto the Temple Mount empowering God's people, who then began to fulfill the given mandate in the presence of the Spirit. The editor of this volume invites the readers of Lukan narrative to journey together on the road to Emmaus, as we continue to ponder the events in the past, the present, and the future.Libri GmbH, Europaallee 1, 36244 Bad Hersfeld 352 pp. Englisch.…
