This congress marked the tenth such meeting from its i…nception in 1974 at Vienna and maintained the tradition of providing a forum for the open discussion of progress made in computer oriented statistics and the dissemination of new ideas throughout the statistical community. It was gratifying to see how well the groups of theoretical statisti cians, software developers and applied research workers were represented, whose mixing is an event made uniquely possible by this symposium. While maintaining traditions certain new features have been introduced at this con ference: there were a larger number of invited speakers; there was more commercial sponsorship and exhibition space; and a larger body of proceedings have been published. The structure of the proceedings follows a standard format: the papers have been grouped together according to a rough subject matter classification, and within topic follow an approximate aphabetical order. The papers are published in two volumes ac cording to the emphasis of the topics: volume I gives a slight leaning towards statistics and modelling, while volume II is focussed more on computation; but this is certainly only a crude distinction and the volumes have to be thought of as the result of a single en terprise. 440 pp. Englisch.

It suggests an inverse relationship between the similarity of countries and th…e volume of trade between them. The Heckscher-Ohlin (HO) factor propor tions theory derives the determinants of comparative advantage in a world of 'two-ness' (two goods, two factors, two countries). It predicts that each country will export that good which uses the country's abundant factor rel atively most intensively. The literature on trade offers an impressive number of studies based on the HO theory. The main methodological problems en countered in the literature are: first, the appropriate formulation of the HO theorem in a multi-factor, multi-good and multi-country framework; second, proper tests of the HO theory and proper links of the theory to empirical analysis. The relevance of the HO theory began to be questioned when important facts of modern international trade proved to be inconsistent with its theoretical framework. Leontief (1953) tested the factor proportions theory, using the US data for 1947, and found that the US had more labor-intensive exports than imports, which is opposed to both perceptions and estimations of factor endowments. The Leontief Pamdoxcreated doubt as to whether or not actual trade patterns and factor endowments are related as predicted by theory, and caused many controversial discussions with regard to the proper empirical implementation of the factor proportions theory. 176 pp. Englisch.

In inter- tional business, agency problems may exist between managers, owners, staff, and other stakeholders who come from different cultures. Therefore, there is a need in designing ef cient management of international business by in uencing the factors (the convergence factors) which cause differences in the interests and cultures of different stakeholders. International business refers to all commercial transactions between two or more nations. Because it comprises a large and growing portion of current world business practice, international business has received considerable attention in academic research (Daniels and Radebaugh 1998). International bu- ness differs in important ways from business conducted within national borders, and poses additional challenges to managers and investors in foreign countries (Mahoney et al. 1998). In this context, Black et al. (1999) state that effective management is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of success or failure, arguing that the success of international business in multinational companies depends most signi cantly on the quality of management systems (Stroh and Caligiuri 1998). As international business involves people from different cultures, every business function including managing a workforce, marketing output, and dealing with regulators, has the potential to involve cross-cultural problems (Zineldin 2007). 292 pp. Englisch.

The project was put together by four Italian universities (Universita ` di Roma Tor Vergata and La…Sapienza U- versita ` Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Piacenza and the Universita ` di Urbino Carlo Bo ) in 2005 and funded by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research for the period 2006 2007. The research title of the project Corporate governance, nancial systems and rms performances was indicative of its agenda: to inv- tigate the role of market imperfections and their interactions on rms decisions. In 2006 (May 12) the research group held the rst conference at the Universita ` di Urbino where intermediate results were rst presented and discussed with o- standing scholars from US, UK, and Italian universities, and the European Central Bank. The book reproduces the papers presented at the Universitad ` iRoma La Sapienza conference (May 16 17 2008) and is organized in two parts. The rst one discusses imperfectionsthat are mainly related to the working of nancial m- kets. The second part includes contributions which focus on different topics of real market imperfections.
