It is the story of the school's evolution from the found…ing years (1901-1930), through the Eight-Year Study and the postwar innovations (1930-1965), to the progressive challenge (1965-1995). The story closes as the school is being reconceptualized and the building reconstructed. This book explains the interrelationship of three of Chicago's education progressives - John Dewey, the philosopher; Colonel Francis W. Parker, the father of progressive education; and Anita McCormick Blaine, the financier and visionary. Several themes shaping the school unify the text: (1) the influence of psychology on educational practice; (2) the centrality of the teacher and instruction in the school; (3) the value of a model upon which to build curriculum; and (4) the interdependent relationship between democracy and education. The fourth theme is as applicable to the multicultural Chicago of today as it was in the 1900s. The central questions are: what is the initial state of a learner's L2-grammar and does UG play a role in L2-acquisition Several hypotheses are evaluated and set in relation to four parameters that are suggested to play a central role in UG and language acquisition. Particular focus is put on parametric differences between English and German. For this purpose Austrian learners have been tested on null subjects and adverbial and verb placement. It is shown that the learners transfer the L1-parameter settings into their early English interlanguage grammars. They are then involved in a disrupted process of parameter resetting, which is not guided by UG but proceeds via cognitive processes and learning strategies. 248 pp. Englisch.

Cootsona analyzes two seminal twentieth-century thinkers: the scientist and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead, and the theologian, Karl Barth. Whitehead… began constructing a philosophy of nature in 1910, which developed into a comprehensive metaphysics in his 1929 opus magnum, Process and Reality. Whitehead described the world and God as dynamically interconnected actual entities. Although Barth clearly posited a diastasis between God and the world in the 1922 second edition of Der Römerbrief, he discovered a more subtle, christologically-based reconciliation of the world and God in the Church Dogmatics (1932-1968). Though the two differ greatly, several points of comparison can be found. The final chapter presents the challenge and inspiration that twenty-first century theologians can receive from Barth and Whitehead. 226 pp. Englisch.

Though the two differ greatly, several points of comparison can be found. The central questions are: what is the initial state of a learner's L2-grammar and does UG play a role in L2-acquisition Several hypotheses are evaluated and set in relation to four parameters that are suggested to play a central role in UG and language acquisition. Particular focus is put on parametric differences between English and German. For this purpose Austrian learners have been tested on null subjects and adverbial and verb placement. It is shown that the learners transfer the L1-parameter settings into their early English interlanguage grammars.
