They argue that people's expectations for relational development influence their communication, faith, and commitment in relationships. Misconstruing sexual or flirtatious intent, for example, is derived from having different scripts about attraction. The book also discusses abusive relationships including characteristics of abusers, stalking, and verbal and physical aggression. Making use of extensive archival research, t…he author of this new study examines this 'invasion of translations' through a detailed statistical analysis of the translation market. The book shows how translations appeared to challenge official claims about the birth of a Fascist culture and cast Italy in a receptive role that did not tally with Fascist notions of a dominant culture extending its influence abroad. The author shows further that the commercial impact of this invasion provoked a sustained reaction against translated popular literature on the part of those writers and intellectuals who felt threatened by its success. He examines the aggressive campaign that was conducted against the Italian Publishers Federation by the Authors and Writers Union (led by the Futurist poet F. T. Marinetti), accusing them of favouring their private profit over the national interest. Finally, the author traces the evolution of Fascist censorship, showing how the regime developed a gradually more repressive policy towards translations as notions of cultural purity began to influence the perception of imported literature. 256 pp. Englisch.

Despite her importance, with the exception of very few critical accoun…ts of her work, she has been usually treated in critical isolation from her black peers, be they male or female. Brooks's earlier stages were discarded by many black critics as works directed to white audiences, whereas black critics who became interested in her nationalist phase limited her to the Black Aesthetic perspective. Such approaches to Brooks's opus fail to do justice to her work which stood on equal footing with other groundbreaking works in terms of her pioneering themes and techniques. This book examines all of Brooks's stages while tracing the changes that marked her voice throughout. By comparing and contrasting her work to Richard Wright, Margaret Walker, Ralph Ellison, Lorraine Hansberry, Amiri Baraka and Sonia Sanchez, it becomes possible to highlight the distinct poetic legacy of Brooks. The aim of this book is to assess the extent to which Brooks participated in the black canon and to examine how far her realistic settings and individualised characters resulted in a poetry capable of providing accurate reflections of black life in America throughout five very vibrant decades. 211 pp. Englisch.

This volume includes sixteen papers based on presentations of the workshop «Wright's English Dialect Dictionary and Beyond» at the 15th ICEHL in Mun…ich (2008). The book is divided into three sections: The first two refer to the genesis and the structure of the EDD respectively. The third part throws light on other dictionaries, from OED3 to the Bank of Canadian English, and on research related to the Survey of English Dialects. This is the first edition of dialect studies that moves Wright's remarkable dictionary in the centre of interest, at the same time seeing his contribution to dialectology critically from a modern point of view. Three of the papers are introductions to the book's sections written by two of the editors. They not only represent the state of the art on Wright's personal achievement as lexicographer and an in-depth analysis of the EDD's complex structure, but also include a survey of the development of English dialectology in the early 20th century. The author employs the term 'labour liberalism' to describe their wide variety of functions. She argues that social democratic and reformist trade unions, which made up the bulk of ICFTU members, were fundamentally shaped by liberal values, even while calling for the active participation of organised labour in the planning and implementation of projects promoting liberal democracy and socio-economic development at home and abroad.
