"In this book, readers are taken on an underground tour by one of the world's foremost specialists in catacomb archaeology. In addition to providing practical information for those wishing to enter the catacombs as visitors or pilgrims, this book explains how recent archaeological discoveries in the catacombs of Rome have changed (and continue to change) our understanding of how Rome's early Christian community expressed its faith while coping with the realities of everyday life. This book is essential for all those wishing to possess an up-to-date manual on why the early Christian and the Jewish catacombs of Rome were excavated, on how early Christian art originated, and on why the catacombs occupy a place of such central importance in the celebrations surrounding the year 2000"--Jacket. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Facility in reading an ancient language requires several competencies: control of the morphology, a working vocabulary of common words and phrases, and a grasp of syntax. This pedagogical aide addresses the first of these by collecting the basic forms and patterns of Sahidic Coptic and presenting them in a convenient format. It is not a full grammar, but a supplement to a grammar. The work provides beginning students with an overview of the morphology of Sahidic Coptic so that they can see the whole of a part of speech or pattern as they learn discrete parts. It offers those who once learned Coptic but have not been able to maintain it with a concise review. While the work is not exhaustive, it is complete enough that it can serve as a useful reference for those who teach Coptic. The work was developed for a course in Coptic at the University of Notre Dame. It is offered in this venue with the hope that it will help students elsewhere. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. As an expert and lively tour-guide, Brinkman takes the reader through the breathtaking landscape of a half-century of ecumenical dialogue. The author makes an invaluable contribution by his deft selection of documents, his thought-provoking commentary on key issues, and his keen discernment of the missionary challenge that faces the church of Christ as it travels on the road to greater visible unity.the work is equally suitable for personal reading and for the college or seminary classroom.A veritiable feast for ecumenical and evangelical readers. This work is a refreshing stimulus to reflection, prayer, and action for the unity and mission of the church in a troubled world.George VanderveldePresident of the North American Academy of Ecumenists, Professor of Systematic Theology, Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto, CanadaOne thing becomes clear from Martien Brinkman's book : those who claim that the ecumenical movement went into a deadlock have not studies its results. Most people suffer from a lack of memory when it comes to the history of ecumenical theology during the past 70 years. This book provides medicine for ecumenical amnesia. It deals especially with the Faith and Order Movement and Commission, within the World Council of Churches. There flows, from Brinkman's book a whole new stream of an ecumenical theological tradition which is scarcely known, even to academic theologians. This tradition treats of such matters as Scripture and Tradition, Faith and Sacraments, Church, World and Kingdom of God. This book provides an excellent overview and in-depth evaluation of the major currents in this developing ecumenical tradition. It will certainly promote its reception in the churches and its study in the academy. At the same time, however, it keeps an eye open for the difficulties and tensions of the dialogue between ecumenical amd evangelical Christians, and between the theological methods of the North and the South. It will be difficult to find any more reliable study-guide to the results of the multilateral ecumenical dialogues of the twentieth century.Anton HoutepenProfessor of Ecumenism, University of Utrecht, The NetherlandsThis book, conceived as a study-guide to the Faith and Order Movement, does precisely what it sets out to do and does it well. It brings the reader into close contact with the documents and studies published by this influential section of the World Council of Churches. Such an inventory comes at the right time, just as the Commission on Faith and Order takes stock after the World Conference of Santiago, and under the guidance of a new director. It is no secret that Faith and Order has been invited to reflect upon its future orientation. The well-documented and orderly survey which Prof. brinkman offers us here will certainly be of help in such a process.Jos Vercruysse S.J.Professor of Church History and Ecumenism, Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Hand-painted books produced in the Low Countries during the late Middle Ages are dazzingly inventive, widely admired both in their own time and today. The makers of Flemish illuminated manuscripts experimented, sometimes flamboyantly, with all aspects of their design, manipulating elements of their format, layout, script, decoration and illustration in radically new and challenging ways. In this book, James H. Marrow discusses prominent features of many of the most exuberant illuminated manuscripts created by leading Flemish illuminators of the 15th and the 16th centuries, considering both the playful ways in which the makers of these books reconfigured their design and the ways they exploited these innovations to define and convey the meaning of their contents more effectively. Marrow considers how the designers of these manuscripts broke down the barriers between the different components of the book; how the shapes of some manuscripts became a kind of image; how script sometimes became decoration or one of several illusionistically treated elements or fields on the page; and how decoration and illustration were intermixed in diverse, witty, and provocative fashions. In this final stage in the evolution of the medieval book, leading Flemish illuminators fundamentally changed the structural dynamics of the page, enlarging its fields of visual and pictorial interest and exploiting novel juxtapositions of subject matter and scale, of viewpoint and different kinds of illusionism, to guide viewers beyond the here-and-now, to evoke multiple and alternative levels of truth, and to effect profound transformations of understanding. This is an incisive study of the course of these developments in the Low Countries and of some of the important ways in which they engaged issues central to the function of the visual arts. Discusses prominent features of many illuminated manuscripts created by leading Flemish illuminator of the 15th and 16th centuries, considering the playful ways in which the makers of these books reconfigured this design, and the ways they exploited these innovations to define and convey the meaning of their contents more effectively.
