And it is probubly true to say that not a few of the more romantically minded among the rank and file saw themselves as fufilling such a role at the beginning of Operation 'Barbarossa' ~ the invasion of Soviet Russia in 1941. Before long however, the man~made hell of the Eastern Campaign drove all such thoughts ftrom their minds as the sweeping conquests of the early halycon days turned into a test of courage and endurance whose sole aim was simple survival. In this sequel to his best selling, general introduction to the Waflen~SS Hitler's Samurai, Bruce Quarrie deals with the histories of each of the seven SS Panzer Divisions beginning with the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Das Reich and Totenkopf. Then came Viking largely composed of Western Eurepean volunteers from Nazi~ occupied countries around a cadre of German veterans. Finally two and later three fresh divisions were formed during 1943~44 ~ Hohenstaufen, Frundsberg and Hitlerjugend ~ and these the last~named in particular, fought with just as much skill and determination as the original formations. Within each chapter, the author describes how, where and why each unit was formed, who its commanders were, and in which campaigns and battles it participated. The book clearly shows why the SS armoured formations deserve the military appelation 'elite', yet does not gloss over the fact that the Waffen~S were guilty of atrocities only rivalled by those of the Russians and Japanese. Additionally, there is a useful chapter on the other SS divisions which were equipped with tanks, and appendices covering SS war photographers, the composition of a Panzer regiment and SS divisional markings, plus a bibliography and an index. For many readers, however, the main attraction of this book will be the superb collection of rare photographs in both colour and black and white selected by the author during research visits to Berlin and Koblenz.…
