In the years following the railway grouping in 1923 The Great Western Railway remained virtually unaffected and was more favourably placed than the other three companies. It has always attracted a passionate following among railway enthusiasts and transport historians of all ages which persists to this day. Uniquely, in the early twenties, the Company embarked upon a series of seven lavishly illustrated books which were known as '"Boys of All Ages" series. Facsimile reprints were published by the transport publisher Patrick Stephens Ltd in the early seventies. Fully illustrated with drawings, maps and rare photographs taken from the G.W.R. archives.
