None are actually dated, Arthur was a popular 19th-century American author, born 1809 to 1885. He started as an author in the 1830s and most of his published books were from 1841 and published in America, Due to lax publishing rights in the UK, publishers used to publish without permission in the UK. Publisher James Shirley Hodson changed his name & address many times from 1792 to 1865, but was only at this address ( Clifford's Inn Passage, Fleet Street )from 1846 -1850, So all these books were published between 1846 and 1850. Used 1850 as date as that was the latest it was published and distinguish it from later and modern copies As they also published other American authors, they may have had an agent in America send them popular books direct, so it is most likely all were the first editions published in the UK. Very rare to find any UK editions of Arthur's works, and here we have 5 books all sold together. Size: 7 x 11cm Approx Each.

Two volumes bound in one, 8vo, pp. viii, 215, [1]; [5], 220-464; a very good copy, slightly browned at foot, but uncut in the original blue paper boards, with white paper spine (spine possibly later), with ink MS title label, upper joint cracked but otherwise sound. First edition of this important collection of Shakespeare source material, edited and published by John Nichols, at the suggestion of the scholar George Steevens. The earlier plays were something of a revelation to many contemporary readers, and, as George Colman the elder comments in his review of the volumes, 'The perusal of these old plays will rather serve to raise than to depreciate his genius in the estimation of his readers, and will shew that the delicacy of his taste and the soundness of his judgment, were almost as remarkable as the richness of his fancy' (Monthly Review, October 1779).
