For centuries the students had been asked to study Grammar twelve years to be at home with the Sanskrit language The early European scholars had almost to undergo the same exercise but what they brought out for their pupils was somewhat different In the beginning the terms of the Hindu grammarians were uncouthly fitted in the western grammatical scheme which were later on gradually given up After several stages of simplification the Sanskrit grammar has now been reduced to the actual requirement of the classical texts Macdonells or Stenzlers revised grammars perhaps represent the points of culmination But these scholars had in their mind only the western students who had studied Greek and Latin before taking up Sanskrit Therefore mule hate hatam sarvam may be the first exercise in a western Sanskrit Grammar but an Indian teacher may be puzzled when asked to explain this sentence to his students in the first lessonTherefore we require a primer of Sanskrit which does not anticipate the knowledge of any other language The structure of Sanskrit itself is to be revealed to the studentsThe noted peculiarity of this book is that it gives exercises on transformation of sentences Its value will be realised only when the exercises are taken up.

Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. Jayarashi Bhatta's Tattvopaplavasimha is a rare piece of work on Indian Skepticism. Its author has boldly criticized the means of valid knowledge affirmed by the various systems of Indian thought, namely Carvaka, Nyaya, Samkhya, Mimamsa, Vedanta, Buddhist and Jain respectively by declaring the annihilation of all the principles. Although the tradition links it with the Carvaka system of thought, its study leads a reader toward a skeptical critique of all the major systems of Indian Philosophy. It is indeed an unique work depicting Jayarashi Bhatta as a great dialectician. The First Sanskrit Edition of this book was prepared by late Pt. Sukhlalji and Sri Rasikalal Parikh, which were published by G.O.S. in 1940. Translation of this book in to English was the project undertaken by Prof. Esther Solomon, which is being introduced as her last monuments.

Vidyaranyas contribution to Advaita consists in the best possible reconciliation of the vital thoughts of several Advaita Schools of the post-Sankara period His approach to Advaita is a blend of several currents that from Indian Philosophical thought that has entitled him to a lasting place in the history of Advaita Vidyaranya though he strictly belonged to none of the three schools viz Vartika Vivarana and Bhamati respectively in his interpretation showed great intellectural ability in amalgamating some of the so-called irreconcilable principles of these schools But his propensity to the Abhasa school in the main flow of his interpretation is beyond doubt Dr Satyadeva Mishra considers Vidyaranya to be the staunchest upholder of the Abhasa theory and is not sure of his partiality to other theories especially the reflection theory Pratibimbavada of the Vivarana-school The present work is a modest attempt to satisfy the need of such a full-length study of Vidyaranaya and his great contribution to Advaita philosophy.

Hardcover. Condición: As New. This book has been prepared keeping in mind the needs of graduate students. As the title of the book shows, it deals with the history of Theravada Buddhism from the time of its origins in India till its spread into Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. It appears that though a tradition using Pali as its sacred language probably existed in the earliest days, differentiation of Theravada from other reated tradition took place somewhat later in time. By Ashoka's time, the Theravadins formed a distinctive group within the Samgha. They preserved the teachings of the Buddha in Pali through their oral tradition and they held their own positions of specific points of doctrine and practice.

Hardcover. Condición: As New. In the Indian cultural horizon, Buddha had a distinctive personality. He was the founder of Buddhism. In Hinduism, he has been believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu. The learned scholars have come to conclusions that Gautama Buddha was born in BC 560 in Kapilavastu near the Himalayas, to the king Shuddhodhana, of the Shakya clan. The word Shakya is another form of kshatriya. The real name of Buddha was Siddhartha. He spent his childhood in comfort and pleasure. Once he happened to see a sick man, an old man and a dead body, the sight of which erode the innocent child quite thoughtful. He therefore, began to think upon a way to remove the sufferings and pain from the world, bringing about peace and comfort to one and all. Siddhartha wandered from place to place, alone learning from various teachers, but the mental peace still eluded him. Once on a full moon day, while he was still in meditation under a banyan tree, he got enlightenment. From that day onwards, he came to be known as Buddha. Buddha Carita is a poetic marvel by the great poet Ashvaghosha which depicts the entire life sketch or biography of Buddha in an exhaustive manner. This epic comprises of twenty eight sargas in which the life and teachings of Buddha have been brought out. It was translated into Chinese in the 7th Century AD and was subsequently translated into the Tibetan language. The present edition of Buddha Carita is the first of its type that includes Sanskrit text, side by side English translation and also photographs of archaeological importance at appropriate places in the text itself. At last, an index of Sanskrit verses is also provided for the benefit of the readers and researchers.

The present volume is a collection of fourteen articles on various aspects of Indian philosophical thought which do not directly deal with specific issues from an analytical standpoint but delve deep into some underlying ideas of Indian modes of thinkingThe chapters included here are based on Veda Upanishad Bhagavadgita Vedanta Vaishesika and Yoga besides Jaina and Buddhist systems of Indian tradition Although the titles or the topics might apparently seem to be diverse or different yet there is an inherent consistency which is unique to the Indian philosophical thought The same has been brought out in these articles on three broad aspects ie Self Society and Value.

The present edition of Yajurveda with English version of Mahidhara and Uvata's commentary by Griffith has become conspicuous with the following salient features The old usage of English version has been replaced by the corresponding modern usage in order that the contents of the translation may be easily made out even by a layman. For instance the old pronominal forms like thy thou thee thine etc. have been replaced by the corresponding terms in modern English. The old English usage of verbal forms has also been supplanted with the corresponding usage in modern English. Some of the Vedic terms like Savita hota etc. were used in the English version in an inappropriate manner like Savitar hotar etc. by Griffith. In the present edition such Vedic terms have been retained in their true form. Griffith's version simply transliterate Sanskrit phonemes in Roman ones without any aid of diacriticals. Keeping in view the dearth of diacritical marks a proper care has been taken to equip the Sanskrit phonemes with appropriate diacriticals in the present edition. The most notable feature of this edition is that it contains the original Mantras in Devanagiri script and complete index of Yajurveda mantras for ready reference. Griffith didn't reproduce the Mahidhara and Uvata's translation on the Mantras (20 31) of the 23 chapter. According to him the subject nine stanzas (20 29) are not reproducible even in the semi obscurity of a learned European language and stanzas 30 31 would be unintelligible without them. In fact the stanzas don't have any pornographic colour as has been depicted by Mahidhara and Uvata in their translations. Hence the present author deems it fit and proper to render the actual intent of the above mentioned 11 stanzas so that the readers may not be mislead by the translations of Mahidhara and Uvata and the Griffith's remarks thereof. 524 pp.

The Hitopadesa belongs to that class of compositions which aim at teaching the principles of polity guided by morality as far as possible, presenting them in the more agreeable form of stories. The Panchatantra of Vishnu Sharma referred to above is its immediate parent, though the work of Kamandaka has been largely drawn upon, and there are occasional quotations from the Mahabharata and other works. The object of the compendium is, as the author himself tells us, to train the young minds in the chief affairs of life by acquainting them with the accumulated experiences of past ages.

Hardcover. Condición: As New. "The Vedas are the most important records of the religion and the institutions of the Aryans. The last and the latest Veda is the Atharvaveda, which is addressed with many other names such as-Amrtaveda, Atmaveda, Angiro Veda, Atharvangirasa, Bhrgvangirasa, Ksatra, Bhaisajya and Chandoveda, etc. Atharvaveda describes the application of both type of ceremonies viz., peaceful affirmation and the witchcraft (Abhicarika) ceremonies. The most cryptic mysteries of universe, the divine prays, applications of offerings, cure for the ailments, marriage, reproduction, family, administration, social pattern and self-protection, education, harmony-sense of unity, pharmaceutical, witchcraft applications, women welfare, etc. all aspects of the universe and the human life are embedded within it. The oldest Bhasya of Sayana too is available in this Samhita. Many translations on Atharva are available, but entire subject-matter on Atharvaveda was translated with critical and exegetical commentary by W.D. Whitney in English and it was edited by Charles Rockwell Lanman during 1905. The translation of the present edition is based on that edition, and Sanskrit text is also included in the current edition. In the present edition, old usage of English has been supplanted with corresponding usage of modern English. Whitney's translation is not available on 20 Kanda, but has been completed in this edition. In the last, an index of mantras in Devanagari is given for the ready reference of the readers.".

Hardcover. Condición: As New. The Upanishads are philosophical and theological mystical treatises forming the third division of the Veda; the preceding portions being the Mantras or Hymns, which are largely prayers, and the Brahmanas or sacrificial rituals- the utterance, successively, of poet, priest and philosopher. There are two great departments of the Veda. The first is called Karma-kanda, the department of works, which embraces both Mantras and Brahmanas; and is followed by the vast majority of persons whose action of religion is laying up of merit by means of ceremonial prayers and sacrificial rites. The second is called Jnana-kanda, the department of knowledges- the theosophic portion of the Vedic revelation; and this is embraced by the Upanishads, and is intended for the select few who are capable of attaining the true doctrine. The most important of the Upanishads belong to what are called Aranyakas or forest-books, which form an appendix to the Brahmanas; and, treating as they do of the release of the soul from metaphsychosis, by means of a recognition of the oneness of its real nature with the great impersonal Self, are so profound that they were required to be read in the solitude of forests, by persons, who, having performed all the duties of a student and a house-holder, retired from the world to and their days in the contemplation of the Deity. The Upanishads undoubtedly represent the highest product of the Indian mind; and one of the most imposing and subtle of the systems of ontology yet known in the history of philosophy; and the Vedanta, styled by Shankaracharya 'the string upon which the gems of the Upanishads are strung,' is regarded as the finest flower and the ripest fruit of Indian spirituality. They contain the highest authority on which the various systems of Indian philosophy rest; and are practically the only portion of Vedic literature which is extensively studied by orthodox educated Hindus in the present day. The Present Edition has been compiled with English translation of 112 important Upanishads many of which are being translated for the first time by a distinguished board of scholars. This edition provides an authentic translation of 112 Upanishads along with a complete index of verses and an exhaustive introduction.

The Mahabharata is a curious mixture of history and mythology, though the former aspect is the subject of grave doubts in the minds of the professional historians. This is called the fifth Veda and it is universally acknowledged to be of pre-eminent importance. It extols its greatness itself in the following words: Yad ihasti tad anyatra yan nehasti na tat kvacit (Whatever is here is also elsewhere; whatever is not here is extant nowhere). It contains not only the celebrated Gita but also a large number of other texts which are themselves independent treatises. It is a valuable product of the ancient Indian literature of the Post-Vedic age and seems to go back to the prehistoric stage of the human society. This is first time that English translation with Sanskrit text is being published. The translation is based on M.N. Dutta which is very lucid and accurate according to the Sanskrit text. It was translated according to that time available text of Kolkata edition. However, this text is not available now and we have arranged it through the text of Chitrashala Press, Pune, which is an authentic and complete text of the Mahabharata. And according to this, sometimes, we do not find the translation of many slokas, that translation has been completed by the editors. (jacket).
