From the introduction - "The criteria for inclusion are these: 1. All English saints, including those of English origin who died abroad and those of foreign origin who died in England. Examples of the first are Boniface and Willibrord, of the second Augustine of Canterbury and Hugh of Lincoln. 2. All saints of whom there is or was a notable cult, revealed by a church- dedication, a place-name, or their feasts in important calendars such as those of Sarum, of the Book of Common Prayer, and the Roman calendar of 1969. This heading includes examples as diverse as Cecilia of Rome, Athanasius of Alexandria, and Martin de Porres. 3. The most important and representative saints of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Exhaustive coverage is impracticable here, so readers are referred to the works of S. Baring-Gould and J. Fisher, The Lives of British Saints (4 vols., 1907-13) and to J. O'Hanlon, Lives of Irish Saints (10 vols., 1875-1903). Cornish saints, however, should all be mentioned, while this edition includes for the first time the Welsh saints Melangell and Myllin. 4. Other saints have been included because of their general importance in the histoiy of the Christian Church or because they are referred to in other entries. Examples are Clotilde, Pelletier, and Lanfranc, who is venerated in Italy and France but not in England. 5.
