    Cape Town, 29 August 1842. The autograph of John Philip (1775-1851), Scottish missionary in South Africa. He tried to support independent native states against colonial aggression, and attempted to prevent the Kaffir War. He was the most prominent politician in Cape Colony for thirty years.
