(octavo) with black & gilt decorative spine label and olive green silk marker ribbon. 1/2 of the dustwrapper in protective plastic cover. ink marked copy in good cond. binding square & tight. covers clean. edges clean. this book has one line (!) of underlining on page 362, otherwise contents free of markings. partial dustwrapper is only the front cover and flap, has scratches , not price clipped. nice reading or study copy (if not for the one line of inking, this would be in fine cond). no library markings, store stamps, stickers, bookplates, no names, no remainder markings. decorative endpapers, 1/2 title, frontis. & title pg. xxxi+411p.+ list of publisher's other titles & colophon. bibliography. glossary of names. religion. philosophy. ancient literature. theology. psychology. poetry. ancient history. ancient india. vedas. upanishads. bhagavad gita. ~ Professor Zaehner has newly translated this important Everyman collection of representative writings from the main Hindu scriptures, and there are considerable differences between the original Everyman and the present edition. Professor Zaehner has varied the style of each translation to suit the genre translated throughout. He has also compiled this new selection with a view to easier comprehension, and giving relevance to the overall development of Hinduism from these canonical texts. It is a constantly repeated truism that all wisdom came from the East, and a great deal of it is embodied in the philosophy associated with religious belief. For a Western mind the most significant benefit emerging from a reading of these writings is that the hymns of the Rig~Veda do not read so much as 'commandments' enjoined by priests and prophets (identified in the European mind with oriental religions), but as 'a poetic testament of a people's collective reaction to the wonder and awe of existence'. The selections represent three successive stages in the history of ancient Hinduism. First are the eight translations of hymns from the Rig~Veda which in original sequence range perhaps from 1500 B.c. to 1200 B.c. They reveal a close contact with nature, and show early attempts to seek and discover the significance of the world and his life and existence within it. Professor Zaehner's selection is confined to those which are formative of later thought, and he has also added four hymns from the Atharva~Veda which bear out the same principles. The next stage, represented by the Upanishads, is the real core of all subsequent Hindu religion, for the Upanishads are the classic formulation of pantheistic mysticism which sees the cosmos as a unitary whole suffused and held together in and by One Reality which both transcends and indwells all things. Moreover some of the Upanishads have a tinge of irony, giving them an unexpectedly modern feeling. The final contribution is the Bhagavad~Gita ('The Lord's Song'), where a new religious environment is immediately sensed. Its hold on tradition is maintained through the form of the Vedic deity Vishnu, the Absolute manifesting itself in its incarnation as Krishna. For centuries the work has proved to be a 'spring of living religious emotion'. While its teaching is theistic, it is not unreservedly so~' it is a garland of many coloured beauties rather than a well~knit harmony of the truth'.…

Its translation into English, by Edwin and Willa Muir, which followed in 1935, itself took on a classic aura. This is in one sense regrettable. Max Brod's recension of Kafka's text had been amateurish and at certain points, arbitrary. Despite its famous conclusion, The Trial remains unfinished and there is argument about the order of various chapters. Additional and cancelled matter has survived (and this can be found in the Appendix to the present edition). It is, however, the Muir version, with its stylistic distinction and freshness of encounter, which, so far as the English~language world goes, remains political philosophy.…

It served as the single greatest display of Robert E. Lee's tactical genius and Stonewall Jackson's troop leadership. But while it was the high point of Civil War battlefield success for the South, Chancellorsville ultimately turned out to be a devastating blow to the future of the Confederacy. In Chancellorsville 1863, the first book on this great clash in three decades, Ernest B. Furgurson demonstrates why soldiers in America and abroad have studied the campaign as a classic for more than 125 years. Basing his work on extensive new research, including unpublished diaries and letters, Furgurson presents Chancellorsville not as a single episode but as a series of distinct and bloody clashes. He shows how Lee countered Union general Joseph Hooker's brilliant opening stroke with one risky move after another~no other Civil War general in either army would calculate or improvise maneuvers so daring. Furgurson examines why Hooker folded in a glaring display of moral weakness; he tells in detail how Jackson was struck down by friendly fire at his moment of triumph; and he describes the decisions and indecision in Washington and Richmond and army headquarters, and the bravery and terror of individual soldiers in the field. Combining an authoritative military analysis with wrenching eyewitness narratives, Chancellorsville 1863 makes clear why Lee's brightest victory predetermined his defeat at Gettysburg.…

Her reign, in the aftermath of the Opium Wars and through the Boxer Rebellion until the collapse of the 2,000~year~old empire, has traditionally been seen as one of murder, poison, and intrigue. But the wicked image is false. In 1974, to the dismay of scholars, Sir Edmund Backhouse~the biographer most responsible for the widespread vision of Tzu Hsi as monster~was revealed to be a con man. And now the author of the celebrated best~seller The Soong Dynasty has undertaken the first complete reappraisal of the empress ~ exposing Backhouse's writings about her as a major hoax and forgery, and establishing that the most important Western correspondent in Peking during her reign~Dr. George Morrison of the London Times~kept a secret diary contradicting his own dispatches about Tzu Hsi. Drawing on many unpublished or long~overlooked contemporary sources, Sterling Seagrave shows us Tzu Hsi as a complex woman whose desperate ~ though often misguided ~ efforts to hold her country together take on a different coloration in the context of unrelenting foreign attempts to colonize and tear it apart. Far from being all~powerful, she was actually a hostage of vengeful Manchu princes who were using her in a power struggle against both Chinese reformers and foreign interference. Here at last is an authentic portrait of this fascinating historical figure, as well as insight into the Western craving to believe in a sinister, dragon~haunted Orient. Dragon Lady is at once a compelling biography and the equally compelling story of how a myth was contrived, how it endured, and how, ultimately, the truth has emerged. Sterling Seagrave grew up on the China~Burma border, the fifth generation of an American family ~ living in the Orient for nearly two centuries (his father was Dr. Gordon Seagrave, author of Burma Surgeon). As an investigative journalist in Asia, he contributed to many major newspapers and magazines. His books include Yellow Rain, The Soong Dynasty, and The Marcos Dynasty. He and his wife and collaborator, Peggy Sawyer Seagrave, live in Europe. With 5 maps and 16 pages of photographs and illustrations.…
