Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 278 pages. Published in 1993. The author's sixth novel. One of James Wilcox's finest achievements. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents James Wilcox's "Guest of A Sinner". His full-fledged New York novel centered around his protagonist, Eric Thorsen. After all, the author did spend some time navigating the streets and perils of Manhattan. "Recaptures the antic spirit of his earlier work. A comedy of errors with all sorts of sexual quandaries, not a few downright crazy characters, and a spiritual dimension to top it all off. Among Eric's worries are: His failure to achieve success as a musician. His work teaching music in a settlement house. His totally screwed sex life (for a long time, he dated a nun). His family's unreasonable expectations of him. His older sister, Kaye, a widowed Macy's employee, dates a creepy married man and entertains not-so-repressed incestuous desire for her brother. There is a Waugh-like breeziness to this delightful novel with its genial view of human frailty and its overwhelming patience with things absurd" (Kirkus Reviews). It is a crying shame that James Wilcox's entire body of work has not received the kind of universal recognition that it so richly deserves, otherwise accorded too many inferior, undeserving writers, products of American media hype. The reason is that he writes social comedy - there is no other kind in literature - which is looked down upon as the lesser art, not to be taken seriously, except, of course, by readers and critics who do take literature seriously. An absolute "must-have" title for James Wilcox collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by James Wilcox. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a late-modern classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are in subsequent editions, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. "Modern Baptists" is regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the canonical works of the 20th century. One of the finest writers of the 20th century and our time. A fine copy. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 454 pages. Published in 1993. The author's third novel. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Bobbie Ann Mason's "Feather Crowns". A triumph. "In her longest, most ambitious work, Bobbie Ann Mason chronicles the spiritual and emotional journey taken by Christie Wheeler, a Kentucky farmer's wife who gives birth to quintuplets in the spring of 1900. The evocative physical detail, tart dialogue, wry humor and striking ability to capture the rich complexity of working people's lives that distinguished Mason's earlier books are linked to a more overtly philosophical quest for meaning that marks this novel as an exciting extension of the writer's already considerable talents. The novel is a meditation on modern celebrity culture: Hordes of people take the train to gawk at the infants, and in one truly shocking moment, a man enters through a window and disturbs the nursing Christie" (Publisher's Weekly and our comments). As long as the novel is, it goes down smoothly in one or several readings. An absolute "must-have" title for Bobbie Ann Mason collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Bobbie Ann Mason. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American writers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BOBBIE ANN MASON TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0060167807. Signed by Author.…

The man was William Mulholland; his creation, the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the tremendous waterway that transformed an arid and sparsely populated town into a thriving city of millions. In 1907, Mulholland and his army of 5,000 men began building the longest aqueduct in the Western hemisphere: 235 miles of canals, conduits, tunnels, flumes, and massive steel siphons that transport water from Owens Valley in the Sierra Nevada mountains to water~starved Los Angeles. Today, the aqueduct still provides 70 percent of the city's water supply. While Mulholland devoted himself to the dream of an abundant West, others exploited the aqueduct plan, reaping immense profits. Land speculators earned millions as the population of Los Angeles swelled, while ruined Owens Valley ranchers, facing disastrous water shortages, mounted a vicious war, dynamiting the aqueduct and imperiling the distant city's water supply. Mulholland built the St. Francis Dam 50 miles north of Los Angeles in an attempt to safeguard his beloved city's water supply by creating a holding reservoir. Now, he thought, the future of Los Angeles was secure. Then disaster struck. The St. Francis collapsed mysteriously at midnight, March 12, 1928, flooding the valley and leaving a staggering toll of at least 500 dead. Called before a coroner's inquest and threatened with charges of murder and professional negligence, Mulholland found himself deserted by the powerful figures who had promoted his career and abandoned by the citizenry who had honored and adored him. He spent the rest of his life in self~imposed obscurity, never learning the truth behind the failure of the dam. The story of the aqueduct~the heroism of its builders, the record~breaking feats of engineering, the political shenanigans of land speculators, and the impact it had on the lives of ordinary people~is more than a chronicle of a gifted engineer. It is the story of the birth and development of southern California, and of a man who was as unique a talent as any in American history.…
