SIS. MI6. MI5. ULTRA. alfred rosenberg. rudolf hess. adolf hitler. heinrich himmler. ~ "A rare insight into the inner workings of the Nazi machine as it prepared to take over Europe. Only Captain Winterbotham could have written this book." ~James M. Gavin. F. W. Winterbotham's The Ultra Secret, which described his role in the breaking and use of the top~secret German code during World War II, was a sensational best seller that made newspaper headlines. In this equally exciting book, Winterbotham reveals his hitherto secret activities as a British spy in the early years of Hitler's Third Reich. Even before the Nazis came to power in the 1930s, Frederick Winterbotham was sent by British Intelligence to Germany to befriend the Nazi leaders and learn as much as he could about their plans. After Hitler took over the government in 1933, he continued his assignment, meeting with Hitler himself, Goering, Rosenberg and a number of generals, visiting military bases, witnessing manoeuvres, and assessing the capabilities of the new German Air Force. Winterbotham played his role so well over the years that the Germans fully accepted him as a loyal friend. He describes how he was recruited for this dangerous job, how he obtained other agents (once carrying $10,000 in a suitcase to pay one of them), what it was like entertaining young German pilots so that they would tell him what he wanted to know, and how he learned which high French officials were on the Nazi payroll. Winterbotham also describes the enormous frustration he sometimes encountered when the British cabinet refused to believe what he told them about the new Stuka dive bomber (they said such a plane was impossible), and the specific German plans for the invasion of Russia outlined to him at dinner one night five years before it was launched. Winterbotham's chronicle is full of anecdotes about agents, double agents and Nazi officials whom he sometimes met in their own homes or with whom he visited at German vacation resorts or political rallies. He describes how he found out about acoustic mines and was able to get photostats of Goering's detailed day book. The result is an absolutely fascinating inside account of a top~level spy at work, a man dealing at the highest levels of international intrigue.

It contains a great deal of hitherto unpublished material. I have read it with pleasure." ~ Winthrop Sargeant. Against the tumultuous background of Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century~political revolution and social upheaval~this beguiling biography presents the young Polish genius (and patriot) who arrived in Paris in 1831, at the age of twenty~one, and was instantly acclaimed and accepted by its circle of brilliant artists, poets and aristocrats. The tide of Romanticism was at its height~in literature, painting, manners and morals. The mistresses of great men were hardly less famous than their lovers, and extravagance was~in that segment of society~the order of the day. Despite his ingrained reserve and conservatism Chopin quickly absorbed the tastes of his new intimates. And a notable crew they were: Delacroix, Heine, Liszt, the superb Pauline Viardot~ Turgenev's muse~and the resident Polish grandees. The beautiful wife of one expatriate nobleman, Delfina Potocka, became a pupil of Chopin's not long after he settled in Paris and a newly discovered batch of letters to her ~ startlingly explicit in their eroticism ~ reveal unsuspected details about their relationship. Then came the nine years with George Sand~in Paris, Nahant, Majorca and Nahant again~years of marvelous creativity in Chopin's life but also the period when the onslaughts of tuberculosis, of which he was to die at the age of thirty~nine, first became menacing, exacerbated by the mounting tensions between the two lovers. Marek writes absorbingly of Chopin's relationships with Sand's son and daughter, with her former lovers, her friends and competitors~all of whom, like true Romantics, poured out their feelings in letters to (and about) one another. Chopin's last years, after his break with Sand, were marked by worsening health and increasing fame. But he was sustained by the unfailing tenderness of his friends, who outdid one another to protect, divert, and console him. And the drama of his life did not end with his death. The subsequent fate of his manuscripts, possessions and~ specifically George Sand's letters to him provide a tragicomic epilogue to the turbulent story. When George Marek's widely acclaimed Beethoven was published, a distinguished critic wrote: "Scrupulously levelheaded, it replaces many of the legends . with hard~earned facts and sensible interpretations of them. As always, the facts are more interesting than the myths." This new volume remarkably performs the same service for Chopin.

Whatever your personal Sun Sign, you will learn here of the tensions and harmony inherent in your various associations with people born under the same sign as yourself and with those born under each of the other eleven Sun Signs. Even more, the particular needs and likely responses of the male and female of each sign are separately analyzed so that, for example, an Aries woman and an Aries man will know what their expectations should be with the opposite sex of all the other Sun Signs, as well as with each other. Beyond this, there is a fascinating and startlingly perceptive examination of the Sun Signs, compatibilities in general, an in~depth exploration of the seventy eight Sun Sign Pattern combinations and an invaluable explanation of the Twelve Mysteries of Love. Readers of the major best seller Linda Goodman s Sun Signs will find in her new book the same penetrating insights into human character, the same compassionate understanding, wide range of knowledge and delightful wit. But they will also find that in Linda Goodman's Love Signs she takes the reader much further into self~knowledge, into an awareness of the power of love . and a discovery of the ways it can be used to develop and achieve mutual trust and happiness.
