In the British Museum's 'Suppressed Books' section there is reputed to be a collection of unpublished manuscripts by the Marquis de Sade that may be consulted 'only in the presecence of the Archbishop of Canterbury and two other trustees' - such is the power of corruption attributed to the 'Divine Marquis' after nearly two centuries. Sade's name has become synonymous with all that is most loathsome in human conduct, but he is perhaps more legend than historical figure. In this vivid biography the author traces his life against a background of the pre-revolutionany excesses and revolutionary turbulence of eighteenth-century France, examines the historical basis for his reputation, and studies the writings - produced during his twenty-seven years' confinement in prisons and mad-houses - that were his troublesome legecay. This is the first heavily illusytrated biography of the Marquis, including both contemporary material (such as illustrations from first editions of Sade's writrings) and later works by artists who captured his spirit or were directly inspired by him, from Aubrey Beardsley to Man Ray to Allpen Jones. It is also the only biography of Sade in English now in print, and the first to make use of the full range of documentary materials, including notebooks he kept in the Charenton madhouse. Illustrated. 214 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
