From dust jacket: This fascinating book explores the history, techniques, and cultural significance of medieval aquamanilia, cast metal objects used to pour liquids in both religious and secular rituals. Often created in appealing animal or human forms, aquamanilia feature two openings, one for filling and the other for pouring. They represent the first emergence of hollow-cast vessels in Western Europe and a significant development in the history of technology. The Metropolitan Museum of Art houses one of the world's most important collections of these medieval bronze vessels and this landmark book results from a collaborative project between the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture, and the museum. It presents and catalogues the museum's entire aquamanilia collection for the first time, as well as selected examples from other collections and other related medieval objects. Informative essays by the curators discuss the meaning, usage, and stylistic development of the aquamanile as well as recent technological discoveries concerning aquamanilia and medieval metalworking. A DVD reveals the original techniques employed to make aquamanilia. Antiques & Collectibles, Middle Ages, Metalwork, European History zslic.
