The contents, with the author, illustrator, and contributor's signatures on the rear endpaper and rear panel, are otherwise clean throughout, and without previous owners' inscriptions or stamps. Housed in the near fine, structurally sound slipcase, which is lightly scuffed to the spine and bottom edges. Issued in an edition of 50 copies, from which this example is numbered 23, and signed by the author James P. Blaylock and illustrator Ferret in blue and black ink, respectively, on the rear panel of the supplementary pamphlet, and by William Ashbless in black ink on the rear endpaper. Ashbless is the pseudonym for the collaborative writing of James P Blaylock and science fiction author Tim Powers, while Ferret is one of several pseudonyms used by science fiction book illustrator and author Timothy MacNamara. 'The Digging Leviathan' (1984) is the eponymous first novel in the series, set in a modern Los Angeles atop a giant underground sea. Winner of the 1988 Philip K Dick Award for best paperback original, 'Homunculus' has been described as a thematic prequel to 'Leviathan' and serves as the first volume of the Langdon St Ives sequence, a steampunk science fiction series set in a Dickensian nineteenth-century London.
