Spine slightly cocked; top edge dust soiled; offsetting to front endpapers from laid-in clippings. Moderate foxing to endpapers and a little foxing to the title page, but non…e elsewhere. The jacket is a bit foxed and has a crease to the spine panel, but no chips or tears and very little wear. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the front free endpaper. It is addressed to Eva Mae (nèe Grice) McKenna (1921-1988), a librarian at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the wife of the novelist, Richard McKenna, who wrote "The Sand Pebbles." "Stranger in Our Darkness" was Joyce Allen Crawford's first novel. It was written under the guidance of Manly Wade Wellman, who taught a novel-writing workshop that Crawford attended. The book is dedicated to Wellman and bears a review by him on the rear panel of the dust jacket. The story is concerned with the plight of a recently released convict and recovering alcoholic named Aaron Sloane. The author did not issue another novel until the 21st century, when she published "Hannah's House" (2008) and "Those who Hold the Threads" (2012) as "Joyce Allen.".

Añadir al carritoCondición: FINE. First printing. An anthology containing works by relatively unknown young Black poets. Includes significant selection of poems by Charles Cooper (his first appearance in print), Kattie M. Cumbo, Julia Fields, Carole Gregory, William J. Harris, Lance Jeffers, Alicia Loy Johnson, James Arlington Jones, and Richard… W. Thomas. While it notes that most of these poets had been published to some extent, most had not had as many poems published as were included here, and all are under the age of 50. Lance Jeffers (1919Ð1985) whose work was known for it exploration of the African American experience went on to publish many volumes of poetry; Julia Fields, who was championed by Langston Hughes also published several influential collections as well as an award-winning childrenÕs book; William J. Harris was both a prolific poet and leading scholar on Amiri Baraka. Each section is preceded by a brief biographical note on the poet. Index of Titles. xv, 236 pp. Very good in gray cloth with gilt lettering on spine in a fair only dust jacket with several large chips, price-clipped.
