SUBTITLED: What it Endured and Accomplished, Containing Descriptions of Its Twenty-Five Battles, Its Marches, Its Camps and Bivouac Scenes, with Biographical Sketches of Fifty-Three Officers, and a Complete Record of the Enlisted Men, by A.P. Smith, late First Lieutenant and Q.M. BOOK DESCRIPTION: 8vo, 429 pgs., frontis portrait, plates, portraits, unit roster (pgs. 411-429). Brown embossed cloth with design on front panel, gilt titled spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Original cloth faded, rubbed, and a bit stained and soiled. Spine faded, edges rubbed, lower spine end worn. Interior with original endpapers, tight and with clean pages. Now with clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 76th NY Infantry was raised from the small towns and farms of central New York State. During its three years of service, it fought with the Army of the Potomac in most of the battles from Fredericksburg to Petersburg. At Gettysburg, the 76th was at the right flank of the entire army, and suffered terrible casualties as a result. The men of the regiment were mustered out January 1865, at which point the reenlisted soldiers and recruits transferred to the 147th NY. The 76th NY Infantry is recognized as one of the Fox 300 Fighting Regiments. REFERENCES: DORN NY393; COULTER 420; "Smith and his regiment, in which he was quartermaster, and later first lieutenant, participated in most of the marching and fighting in the war in the east except that in the Shenandoah Valley. This account is the product of memory, diaries, and various official records. Naturally it is concerned mostly with military affairs, yet Smith includes impressions and observations of the scene which presented itself along the line of march. Pillaging the countryside, 'Secession ladies', slaves, and other related subjects find a place in this narrative."; NEVINS I pg 159: "An accurate account of the regiment's role in the Eastern campaign; Quartermaster Smith had access to much correspondence; 48 pen and ink sketches enhance the study." FOX Regimental Losses, pg 209.
