(Daraus: Nestled in the Tyrrhenian Sea between the coast of Tuscany and Corsica, the island of Elba lies snugly. It was here that Napoleon I, following the Treaty of Fontainebleau, was famously exiled after his forced abdication in 1814. And the island is also the starting point of Fritz Bornstück's solo exhibition TEN, featuring new paintings and ceramic works. Working on Elba during the spring of 2017, Bornstück seems to have discovered a new lightness and openness towards the landscape in his paintings. The island is rich in iron ore and the Greeks called it ??????? meaning 'soot' or 'fume' - after the fumes from the furnaces used for melting metal. The iron ore in the ground gives the soil a reddish touch, making the surrounding sea seem even more azure. And in the Italian springtime light, with the bright colours of early flowers and the scent of wild herbs, the scenery of Elba is almost ancient in its rural, bucolic innocence. The exhibition is generously supported by TIME SYSTEM & HJØRRING KUNSTMUSEUM DENMARK. / Jesper Christiansen's "Notepaintings" make up a group of paintings begun in 1994. They develop the artist's thematic concern during the past ten years with the motifs of painting, which in the context of Christiansen's work may be understood as extending to the very motivation for painting. In the series entitled "Signpaintings" (1992-93), recognizable forms from his earlier pictures walls, coat hangers, stairways and chairs were replaced by words. "Notepaintings" continue this development, but are more concentrated and systematic in their composition and exploration of the pictorial possibilities offered by word-painting.
