Here is another of the books about maritime history or closely related. This one is titled: "Splendor Sailed the SoundThe New Haven Railroad and the Fall River Line," by George H. Foster & Peter C. Weiglin. This very large hard cover book (8 ¼ x 11 inches, 384 pages) was published by Mid-State Associates and the Potentials Group, dated 1989, with no mention of edition. The book is bound in simulated navy blue covers with silver gilt titles on the spine and protected by a pictorial dust jacket, itself encased in a mylar sleeve. The book is amply illustrated throughout with vintage b&w photos of the vessels plying the Long Island Sound routes between Boston and New York. Apparently, they were known in their heyday as "the finest inland waterway vessels afloat." Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some very minor edge wear, now presumably halted by the application of the mylar sleeve. That sleeve, however, is taped to the covered and I have chosen not to remove it. The hard covers, therefore, can't fully be seen but from what I can see, they appear clean, bright and unbumped. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

In their day, the Fall River Line steamboats were known around the world as the finest inland waterway vessels afloat. They attracted this attention despite the regularity of their service, day after day and night after night, between New York City and ports on and beyond Long Island Sound (of which Fall River MA was only one). Only the fog occasionally impeded movement, or caused collisions and groundings; the miracle is that, particularly in the days before wireless and radar, the Sound fleet completed its appointed rounds with as good a safety record as it had. This, of course, made an accident, when it did occur, all the more lurid and sensational.
