Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st printing thus. [nice tight copy, minor edgewear to cover, itty-bitty scrape mark on front cover, extremely faint shadow from removed price sticker at lower right corner of front cover]. Mass Market PB Very late Cain -- the last novel he published during his lifetime, in fact -- about a guy wh…ose fundraising efforts for a national institute of biography lead him into "the attendant complications of high politics, corporate corruption and a stormy and dangerous love affair with the beautiful Hortense -- the wife of his rich patron." Cain's biographer Roy Hoopes noted that it was the author's "first real attempt to write about contemporary people in what might be called his walk of life: that is, upper-middle-class people from the universities, business, law practices, politics, and journalism," but that the results unfortunately revealed that "time had, indeed, passed Cain by." The book was both a critical and commercial failure, and Cain died the following year. Illustrated by (cover photo) Robert Golden (ilustrador).

Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Near Fine. No Dust Jacket. 1st printing thus. [nice clean copy, no significant wear, a teeny-tiny red dot on the bottom edge]. Mass Market PB "Things are quiet on Dave Howell's lonely Ohio farm. Suddenly a hijacker plummets into his life, along with a $100,000 cash ransom and a beautiful air stewardess he's… been holding hostage. The temptation is too great to resist -- with the hijacker dead, who would know if the money was lost or stolen?" (Oooh, I know, I know! The dame!) A late Cain work (his penultimate published novel, in fact), and not bad. At the time of its publication in 1975, it was his first new book in a decade, and his publisher decided to put a lot of publicity behind it -- figuring, in part, that the public might have to be reminded that the author was still alive and writing -- and the resulting reviews were generally good. (Cain probably should have left well enough alone at that point, as his subsequent (final) novel, "The Institute," got quite a different reception.). Illustrated by (cover photo) Bill Carter (ilustrador).

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. The works of W. W. Jacobs (1863-1943) remain among the most distinctive contributions to late Victorian and Edwardian short fiction, combining maritime realism with humour and occasional supernatural elements. Best known for The Monkey's Paw, Jacobs drew heavily on his experience of Londo…n's docklands, producing sharply observed tales of seafarers, clerks, and river life. The present collection brings together a varied group of his works in both first editions and later issues, including British and American printings, and a small number of reprints. A Collection of Works by W. W. Jacobs Comprising the following titles: Salthaven - Methuen & Co., 1908 first edition. Deep Waters - Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, August 1919 first US illustrated edition. Deep Waters - Hodder & Stoughton, undated, but believed to be the UK first edition (c. 1919). The Castaways - Hodder & Stoughton, 1916 first edition. Ship's Company - R. S. Surtees Society, 1986 reprint edition. Many Cargoes - Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, 1903 reprint edition (first published 1896). The Night-Watchman and Other Longshoremen - Hodder & Stoughton, 1937 reprint. The Skipper's Wooing and The Brown Man's Servant - C. Arthur Pearson Ltd, London, 1902, leather bound edition. Notes on the Collection: This group complements the earlier set by extending into both later printings and variant editions, including American and illustrated issues. The presence of two editions of Deep Waters is particularly useful, showing both the UK and US treatment of Jacobs' work, with the Scribner's edition retaining its distinctive pictorial binding. Salthaven represents one of Jacobs' later novels, moving beyond short story collections into longer narrative form, while The Night-Watchman and Other Longshoremen continues his established maritime themes with character-driven sketches drawn from dockside life. Many Cargoes, his breakthrough collection, appears here in a later issue, still retaining strong collecting appeal as his foundational work. The inclusion of The Castaways and Ship's Company further broadens the representation of his output into the twentieth century. The small leather-bound The Skipper's Wooing adds a different element to the group, suggesting either a presentation or later collected edition, and providing some visual contrast to the predominantly cloth-bound volumes. Condition: Overall condition is good to very good (with Ship's Company being near fine, and The Castaways only fair due to substantial spotting). Cloth bindings generally clean with moderate wear and rubbing. Some toning and marking to spines and boards. Occasional bumping to corners and spine ends. Text blocks generally clean with typical age toning. Some spotting visible to edges in places. The leather bound volume with rubbing and light wear to spine. Some ownership inscriptions. A sound and attractive working collection, with a mix of brighter and more subdued bindings giving good shelf presence. Format: Mixed formats, predominantly in original publisher's cloth, with one leather bound volume and one modern reprint. Summary: A varied and visually appealing supplementary collection of W. W. Jacobs' works, bringing together UK and US editions, later issues, and a small number of reprints. The set offers useful breadth and complements a core Jacobs collection effectively. Weight of set approximately 4.1kg (unpacked). There will be no extra postage required other than that quoted for UK orders. International orders may incur some extra postage charges.

Light rubbing to boards and edges. Dust jacket with title, a different colour illustration and photographer on upper cover, description and adverts to inside flaps. Front fl…ap price-clipped. Edges chipped with loss to corners, now protected by a removable clear plastic cover. Clean text and bright illustrations throughout. Colophon to verso of the title: "Printed. by Jas. Truscott & Son, Ltd., London & Tonbridge". A well preserved copy of this rather shocking children's book. ** "The earliest record of the rhyme is in Tommy Thumb's Pretty Song Book, published c. 1744, which noted only the first four verses. The extended version given below was not printed until c. 1770. Although the song was not recorded until the eighteenth century, there is some evidence that it might be much older. The death of a robin by an arrow is depicted in a 15th-century stained glass window at Buckland Rectory, Gloucestershire, and the rhyme is similar to a story, Phyllyp Sparowe, written by John Skelton about 1508. The use of the rhyme 'owl' with shovel', could suggest that it was originally used in older Middle English pronunciation. Versions of the story appear to exist in other countries, including Germany." - See I. Opie and P. Opie, The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes. *** "The rhyme has been often reprinted with illustrations, as suitable reading material for small children. The rhyme also has an alternate ending, in which the sparrow who killed cock robin is hanged for his crime, although it is possible that that is a later addition. Several early versions picture a stocky, strong-billed bullfinch tolling the bell, which may have been the original intention of the rhyme." - See M. C. Maloney, ed., English illustrated books for children: a descriptive companion to a selection from the Osborne Collection .
