Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Wisdom at the Crossroads is an introduction to the life and thought of the gifted Jesuit priest, theologian, author and educator, Michael Paul Gallagher SJ (1939-2015). It follows his journey from the simplicity of an Irish rural childhood to the more complex world he soon encountered. That changing world prompted him to think deeply about the question of faith in our times, the effects of a shifting culture on our perceptions, and the challenge of unbelief and atheism as it manifests itself today. The book illuminates Michael Paul's rare gift - both in personal conversation and in the written word - of helping people to move from a detached consideration of faith to an awareness of what was deepest in their own hearts, for it was from that hidden layer of wonder that he believed the journey of faith could unfold. Being attuned to the depths in his own heart, he was able to identify the liberating wavelength in the lives of others and in the culture of our time, awakening many people to a vision that healed them into hope. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. John Henry Newman was an important and controversial figure in the religious history of England in the 19th century. An esteemed academic, prolific author and convert from the Church of England to Catholicism, Newman was a complex and conflicted individual. Intensely loyal to his friends, highly-strung, kind-hearted and tenacious, Newman combined the best of both the Anglican and Catholic traditions. His volume of lectures entitledThe Idea of a University, explained his philosophy of education. During the four years he spent in Dublin he was was instrumental in the founding of theCatholic University of Irelandin 1854; this later evolved into University College Dublin, now the largest university in Ireland. John Henry Newman was declared a saint on 13th October 2019. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This book is the result of two preached retreats I gave to mark the recent Year of Consecrated Life (2015). However, the origin of the material goes much further back, drawing on my teaching experience both at Manresa Centre of Spirituality and at Milltown Institute (covering a period of thirty years). In both places I had taught courses on religious life its history, theology, and most of all its underlying spirituality. Indeed, I have always used history and theology (and other disciplines such as psychology and anthropology) in service of exploring and renewing the spirituality of religious life. Another way of saying this is that I am above all interested in values (as appreciated, appropriated, and articulated). This lies behind my decision to structure the talks (now the book) almost entirely around the vows. After an initial chapter on the origins of religious life, I devote two chapters each to poverty, chastity, and obedience. My emphasis is not on the vows as such (dealing with questions that Canon Law might raise) but on the motivating values that the vows express. Only these values can explain why people enter and flourish in religious life. All religious, without distinction, are called to be radical and free. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. A wonderful collection of delicious feasts, originally prepared for Sunday lunches at a Jesuit house in Birmingham. Each recipe is accompanied by a saint with a (sometimes tenuous) connection to the ingredients or the dish itself. A brief life of each saint give the book a very special dimension. For many years two Irish women have cooked Sunday lunch for the Jesuit house in Birmingham. Their guests have been the Jesuits themselves, Jesuit novices, and many other visitors. Both women emigrated from Ireland when they were young and were greatly helped by the Jesuits on their arrival in the UK. When they retired from their respective careers they wanted to give something back to the Jesuits and decided to cook a Sunday lunch. Now in their 90s and 70s respectively, they have brought their years of Sunday lunches together in this very special collection. All royalties to the Jesuit Refugee Service. The recipes are all terrific . easy to follow and beautifully photographed. Intercom This is a lovely book . food for the body, food for the mind. Irish Catholic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Many people are good people and genuine searchers, but often lack the practical methods and tools to know how to deepen their faith. Often the idea about faith that they have inherited is not helpful, and they need something real and experiential that helps with the complexity of contemporary living. This book redefines spirituality as about channelling the inner fire; there is some God given desire within us that seeks expression. Our goal is to become fully alive and human, just like Jesus was, by tuning into our inner world of feelings and desires. We are called to live like Christ, tuning into Gods plan for us and how we could serve the world. This book synthesizes the Ignatian system into 15 easy to understand concrete aspects. God is at work in each of our lives right now. Our job is to uncover the subtle messages that God is communicating to us, to be in dynamic relationship with God, and engaged with the world. It is a lot more about letting go and abandoning ourselves to the reality of what is, rather than trying to make things happen through our efforts. This is a personal journey that everyone has to make for themselves, though having companions and support is crucial to making it possible. This book spells out the practical steps and techniques developed by St Ignatius Loyola that allow us to find God in our experience and change our lives to be active agents for change. This book redefines spirituality as about channelling the inner fire; there is some God given desire within us that seeks expression. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. With an Introduction by Peter McVerry SJ Why might this man be declared a saint? Pedro Arrupe, twenty-eighth Superior General of the Society of Jesus, re-founded the Jesuits and re-cast Ignatian spirituality for our times. He was a prisoner of Imperial Japan, a first responder when the atom bomb fell on Hiroshima, a pioneer of Catholic social justice and a founder of the Jesuit Refugee Service. His mind and heart were shaped by the Second Vatican Council. Few people-outside religious life-know his story. But now that the process for his beatification is underway, he will become known across the Catholic world and beyond. Best-selling author Brian Grogan SJ, whose life has been deeply influenced by Arrupe, has written Pedro Arrupe SJ: Mystic With Open Eyes. With a foreword by Peter McVerry SJ, this booklet is a guide to the extraordinary life of a great-souled human being. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Willie Doyle SJ was born in Dalkey on 3 March 1873 to an affluent Catholic family. Willie entered the Society of Jesus in 1891. taking vows, Fr. Doyle embarked on a period of Jesuit formation known as Regency. Fr. Doyle worked in two Jesuit schools Clongowes Wood College and Belvedere College. He was ordained in 1908. His prayerful nature took him into Retreat Ministry after ordination. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola are a popular way of praying in our time. At the turn of the Twentieth Century, they were almost the exclusive preserve of priests brothers and religious sisters. The Exercises made such a profound impact on Fr. Doyle that he felt they should be available to the largest audience possible. Fr. Doyle also had a great interest in vocations to religious life, and produced two bestselling pamphlets on the priesthood which were published by the Sacred Heart Messenger. In 1915 he volunteered as a Chaplain in the First World War. His time in the war saw him demonstrate great acts of heroism. His death in August 1917 came as a great blow to those who had known him. He died attempting to save injured soldiers from the battlefield at Ypres. His body was initially recovered, but subsequently obliterated by a German shell. Interest in his life was sparked by a book written by Professor Alfred ORahilly, which became a bestseller. The book went on to inspire future saints, like Mother Teresa. The desire to have Fr. Doyle declared a saint received much traction in the 1930s, but it lapsed as the Irish Jesuits preferred to give their energies to the cause of Fr. John Sullivan. In recent years the cause has begun to get traction and a lay Association of the Faithful is working to have it promoted. Willie Doyle SJ was an Irish Jesuit priest and Chaplain in the First World War. His time in the war saw him demonstrate great acts of heroism. The cause for his canonisation has become increasing popular in recent times. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Walking with Ignatius is a celebration of 500 years of the Society of Jesus, as seen through the eyes of its first Latin American Father General, Arturo Sosa. Comprised of interviews with Father General conducted over a period of two years by Dario Menor, Walking with Ignatius retraces the 'inner tension' - both personal and communal - that defines the quest for meaning over the ages: from the time when St Ignatius begged for alms to sustain his studies to a world transformed by globalisation. Menor's questions reflect the spirit of the Ignatian practice of discernment: unafraid to ask questions and to face up to the challenges of the present, Menor and Sosa engage in a spiritual conversation that covers such topics as the life of Ignatius, the life story of Sosa, the challenge of the unsettling twenty-first century, and the future of the Church. With great care Sosa sifts through the past, present, and future of the Society of Jesus and of the Church. The reader is invited in the Ignatian spirit into a conversation about the future direction of the Church in which the question of being a Catholic is replaced with the question of how we become Catholics. Included is a section-by-section guide - complete with bible references, pointers for prayer, and tips for spiritual conversation - that encourages the reader to embark on a spiritual journey of their own. Intended for those within and outside the Ignatian family, Walking with Ignatius is both an exemplar of spiritual conversation in action and a response to Pope Francis's call for Jesuits to bring the practice of discernment to the world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Change is an essential part of life. How we meet that change is where it can get interesting. When a person goes through a conversion experience, there is an automatic assumption that they have it all figured out immediately, and they know exactly what God wants them to do. This is not the case. We only have to look at St. Paul. While his conversion was dramatic, Paul tells us in his letters that he had to spend considerable time in the wilderness pondering what had happened to him, and figuring out what exactly God wanted him to do. The same is true of St. Ignatius of Loyola. St. Ignatius had a dramatic conversion which shattered not only his leg but all his previous dreams and aspirations. Such a change was not easy to get his head around, and he was forced to enter into his own period in the wilderness. This time of reflection not only brought him closer to God, but it also gave him a greater insight into himself. In this booklet, you will be able to witness the transformation which took place in the life of Ignatius from a vainglorious young man obsessed with his own success, to one who put the service of God and other people before anything else. This transformation, while dramatic, was not immediate. It took time and reflection and took him across various locations. In all of his travels, Ignatius was focused on one thing, what was God calling him to do? Ignatius conversion will allow the reader to get a perspective on how Ignatius faced the challenges which transformed his life, and hopefully, the reader may be able to make time in their own life to explore things which brought about changes in their life and see how God was operating within this change. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. John Sullivan SJ was born in Dublin in 1861. Once dubbed'the best dressed man about Dublin', he seemed destined, like his father, for a career in law. Then, following a conversion to Catholicism, at the age of 35 he entered the Jesuit novitiate in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Immediately after his ordination, he was sent to Clongowes Wood College, Co Kildare, where he spent most of his remaining years. At Clongowes, he became reknowned for the hours he spent in prayer, his asceticism, and for his kingness and wisdom. His reputaiton spread outside the college waqlls, with many people calling on him in their hour of need. His love of the poor and sick led to miraculous cures being attributed to him. After his death in 1933, devotion to him continued to grow, and in 1947 the first stage of the process of Canonisation was introduced. The large numbers who visit his tomb in St Francis Xavier Church, Gardiner Street, Dublin, bear testimony to the continuing belief in the power of his intercession with God. John Sullivan SJ was beatified in Dublin in May 2017. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. We often find it hard to believe that we have a unique voice. Advent begins withavoice crying in the wilderness. Every voice matters especially voices in the wilderness that are stifled and silenced by alienation and apathy. This book dares you to take the time to listen to Advent voices in the wilderness that persist with calls to be heard and respected. December is a month when we fill the winter days and nights with a new busyness. This book is a chance to pause, catch our breath. This book is a fingertip on the pulse to appreciate our every breath and heartbeat as a gift. It is a chance for the reader to connect with Gods word during Advent cradling a word, a phrase or an image that whispers hope into some parched place in our lives a place of dry bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14). This is where Gods patient dialogue waits for our response. The author celebrates Gods love enfolding all that we hide just as Adam and Eve hid their own natural beauty (Genesis 3:7) unaware of Godshide and seekpresence. Here is a God, eager to guide them and us from shadowy darkness into a perpetual light of eternal love. Advent gives us the space to create new contexts that transform predictability into possibility, despite our inadequacies and the freight of failures that we carry. Advent is a time to develop skills as disciples, so as not to miss God. Advent is about being disciples. The gospels show us how the disciples stumbled, fumbled and slowly and gradually learned to change, follow and witness. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Martin Hogan's third book of reflections is an invaluable aid to celebrants or leaders of weekday liturgies and Eucharist. Based on his own liturgies as parish priest of a busy Dublin parish, they give both accurate exegetical information and a homiletic approach directly relevant to the faith and life experience of weekday congregations. Those engaged in liturgy preparation will find them helpful and informative. The author's approach comes both from pastoral experience and personal prayer, giving a refreshing cluster of insights into the daily gospel reading. The calendar of the book helps the busy presider, as the reflections are linked to the readings by calendar date rather than the church calendar. `I read these reflections first thing every morning for prayerful reflection and to give me a few ideas for a short homily on the day's gospel' - words of one Parish Priest. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book has been written in a year when Parish Pastoral Councils (PPC) could not meet physically due to the Covid 19 pandemic. For many PPCs this meant that some stopped meeting or met on zoom, or at least re-grouped to form the backbone of the parish sanitising committee. It is hoped that those who read this book will have an "aha" moment, where they find that the purpose of PPCs becomes more clear to them, and they can begin to imagine the part they can play in the pastoral development of their parish. The role of the PPC is explored relating this to the purpose of the parish community, debunking the myth that the PPC is a committee. It also looks at what can be called the five Ps of the PPC: Pastoral, Prayerful, Partnership, Planning and Participation. The whole notion of discernment for pastoral action is explored and how this relates to the ongoing prayer-filled reflection of the PPC and the parish community. Then there is an in-depth exploration into the whole notion of partnership and the implications for how the PPC relates to the parish community. There are some very practical helps about what makes planning in the PPC pastoral, and how that can be developed as a way of working in all parish groups. The purpose of mission statements is examined and how these can provide a platform for parish renewal and reflection, connecting them to parish assembly and listening together. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Many books have already been written on spiritual counselling, especially in the Ignatian tradition. But very few consider how Ignatius gave spiritual advice in his letters, directed to various and specific situations. If God really leads us in our spiritual journey, as Ignatius believed, what is the role of the spiritual adviser? What part is played by the numerous rules given in theSpiritual Exercises? The letters show that Ignatius really wanted to give scope to his correspondents and to their awareness of the work of the Holy Spirit within them. Ignatius deployed a Pedagogy of Consolation in which his correspondents were trained to exercise their own spiritual agency by discovering Gods abundant gifts. It was clear to Ignatius that a counselling relationship was first grounded in Gods freedom but also in the freedom of the person who asks for assistance. In six chapters, Patrick C. Goujon focuses on eight letters. He offers a careful reading which emphasizes what makes giving spiritual help possible in a conversation. We are shown how Ignatius deals with decision-making and with obstacles in the spiritual life. He is also revealed giving encouragement and correction and advising about how to offer these to others. His aim is to help people grow in freedom which, in turn, permits them to live according to Gods will. Through his letters, we are allowed to enter not only Ignatiuss study, the famouscameratain Rome, but also into his heart. This volume is an excellent introduction to the letters of Ignatius of Loyola () making it an important scholarly contribution not only for those interested in Ignatian spirituality, but also for those interested in the history of spirituality more broadly, Mark Rotsaert,ARSI. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. As the Church Year passes, we anticipate the next festival and season, in much the same way as gardeners look for the first signs of spring or the first frosts of winter, as they plan their planting activities. So, in the Church, Advent passes into Christmas and Epiphany with a speed that seems driven by activity as much as reflection; but the approach of Ash Wednesday can catch us unawares, especially in a year with an early Easter. St Brigids Day and Candlemas, set at the beginning of February, warn us that we need to think about how to make the most of the weeks to pray our way, once more, through the days of the Passion and Resurrection of Christ. By taking the Cross, and even more specifically, the words Jesus spoke while nailed to that Cross, over the course of some weeks, rather than a few hours on Good Friday, we have time to consider more deeply the inner themes and conclusions. This meditation will help us to prepare for Holy Week, with a mind and heart familiar with the readings and ready to be filled with our own prayerful reflections. If this small book can prompt a mindset of deliberately slowing the pace of the contemplation of Christs words, and especially those from the Cross, then it has fulfilled its purpose. By taking the Cross, particularly the words Jesus spoke while nailed to that Cross, in the lead up to Easter, we have time to deeply consider the inner themes and conclusions. This book will help to prepare for Holy Week, and prompt a mindset of deliberately slowing the pace of the contemplation of Christs words, especially those from the Cross. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Journeying to the Light is intended to be read daily through the period from Advent Sunday to the Epiphany. It is largely based upon one of the Eucharistic readings each day. There are variations, and it can be adapted to be used whatever the length of Advent, and for individual or group use. The author weaves contemporary trends with biblical themes and with events of his own life. It has at its heart the Incarnation; anticipated by the prophets; joyfully experienced through the words of Luke, and proclaimed to the nations through the visit of the Magi, as recorded by Matthew. The author is an Anglican priest, but as this book is based upon the the Revised Common Lectionary, it is ecumenical in its reach, as many of the readings coincide with those appointed for both the daily Mass in Roman Catholic Churches and in Anglican Churches. Equally, the daily reflections, may be of use to all individuals who are seeking to establish a regular period of contemplation and space through Advent and Christmas, which is traditionally full of distraction and busyness. Bishop Brendan Leahy is joined by Archbishop John McDowell of the Church of Ireland in commending the book for our use, and two Church of England bishops add their voices to suggest that a deepening of our reflection, throughout these days of joyous hope, helps us to seek further the source of the light that was coming to humanity, that is Jesus, son of Mary, redeemer of the world. A Church-goer, a seeker after truth or, quite possibly in these tumultuous days, a Christian soul whose path has become darkened or distracted in recent years will find some thing in these pages to encourage them beyond written texts of any kind to set their eyes towards the light and their heart to the divine. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The role that spirituality can play in recovery from addiction is poorly understood. Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung described alcoholism as a spiritual disease that demanded a spiritual awakening. How do you have a spiritual awakening, however? How, when you are suffering with addiction, do you find time in everyday life for spirituality? In Freedom from the Prison of Addiction, Martina Killeavy marries the genius of St Ignatius to the famous Twelve-Step Programme of Alcoholics Anonymous. The result is that a pattern of gratitude, an ability to stay anchored in the present and a facility to find God in all things enters daily life. In that pattern of gratitude and that relationship with God is one path to freedom. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. At the darkest hour the dawn arrives again anew, just like always, but we forget so easily. This post-pandemic world of uncertainty, drought, war and death is not the end. Its not all of reality as it proposes to be but just a temporary place of growth and purification. We need to be open to learn about humility, compassion and grace. A person, the Christ, has lifted us up. Our true destiny is revealed, to be with the Light, breaking open the clouds of weary, often isolated existence.Emerging from the Mess is essentially the experience of how suffering and pain alternates with great joy and fulfilment. Especially when we reach the limits of our strength and endurance (Richard Rohr calls this liminal space), we need to remember to hang on, to be patient and faithful in prayer. This books challenge is to live every day like a resurrection day. It is all about gratitude: to see the absolute giftedness of every moment, the wonder of every encounter, the silver lining on every cloud. We have structured this book in sections to mirror this exact same process of desolation to hope, darkness to light, and 11th hour rescue from death into resurrection. Emerging from the Mess is essentially the experience of how suffering and pain alternates with great joy and fulfilment. Especially when we reach the limits of our strength and endurance, we need to remember to hang on, to be patient and faithful in prayer. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A short but fascinating biography of this most courageous and adventurous of saints. One of Ignatius of Loyolas original companions, St Francis was central to the formation of the Society of Jesus. Quoting extensively from his letters, the author describes in detail the works he did throughout Europe in the 1530s. There are many stories and anecdotes which bring Xavier to life and we begin to feel we know him well as we learn about his personality, his interactions with the poor, priests, bishops and kings. On April 7th, 1541, Xaviers thirty-fifth birthday, he set sail for India, arriving in Goa just over a year later. He spent about 8 years in both India and Indonesia, baptising thousands and working to set up churches and communities. In 1549 he arrived in Japan where he spent a couple of years, before travelling to China where he died in 1552 just six miles from the Chinese coast. This well researched account is readable and entertaining and give a lively picture of life as a missionary in the sixteenth century. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Denis Tuohy had been a broadcaster in news and current affairs for half a century when he was asked to contribute to BBC Radio Ulsters Thought for the Day in his native Belfast. A reporter and presenter who had covered major stories around the world for BBCs Panorama and Tonight, ITVs This Week and ITN news was to move into uncharted territory. This book is a collection of his Thought for the Day pieces over the past few years with a linking commentary about his professional and personal life. Across my own wide landscape, he says, Ive been free to make unprompted choices of subject and to communicate them, in little more than a couple of minutes, to listeners in cars, kitchens, care homes, as they face up to another day. The choices have been prompted by his travels, by meeting famous names and by personal history. In her memoirs Margaret Thatcher described their first encounter as hostile but met him again in calmer circumstances. Richard Burton told him he could no longer watch his beloved Wales play rugby in case they might lose. Irelands rugby star Jack Kyle said that his moments of inspired brilliance had somehow happened through him and he was grateful. He recalls a multi-faith gathering in New York after the killing of Martin Luther King, meeting an integrated Belfast singing group in apartheid South Africa, and taking part as an actor in Over the Bridge, Sam Thompsons play about bigotry in the Belfast shipyard. Streets and Secret Places is a mix of reflections that have featured in Thought for the Day including insights that have come with experience. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Driven by a burning passion to help Christs marginalized, she dared not only to dream a better life for them but to make this impossible dream a lived reality. This was the great miracle of her life. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The reflections in this book are based predominantly on the gospel readings for the weekdays of the coming liturgical year, 2022/23, with occasional references to the first reading. They follow the sequence of the weekdays of the liturgical year, beginning with the Monday of the first week of Advent on the 28th of November. In the course of the liturgical year, the gospel readings present us with a significant selection of the words and deeds of Jesus from all four gospels. In and through these gospel readings we encounter the living word of the risen Lord to his church. There is rich fare here to nourish our faith life and to help us to grow in our knowledge and love of the Lord. These short reflections attempt to listen to the gospel readings on their own terms while showing how they can continue to speak to our lives today. Many people feel drawn to basing their prayer on the Scriptures, in particular the gospels. It is hoped that these reflections will serve as a help to prayer. They may also be of service to priests who seek to offer a short reflection on the gospel reading of the day in the context of the Eucharist. Where there is a weekday Liturgy of the Word, with or without Holy Communion, they can be read as a reflection on the readings. On most week days, the same gospel reading is proclaimed in the church throughout the world. To read and reflect upon the gospels for the weekdays of the liturgical year is to go on a spiritual journey with the universal church. Those who travel this journey will discover that the Lord's word is a light for our path. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
