Downs learned fly dressing from Geoffrey Bucknall and illustrated several books for him. He also worked with John Veniard, illustrating his books and tying flies in demonstrations with him. "In this book I aim to introduce a new technique with each fly - and enough flies to cover the minimum throughout the season." "This book is intended for those who feel that trout fly dressing is difficult [and] for anglers who dress one or two flies - and would like to dress a few more. After studying at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Tew joined the Indian Civil Service so that he could fish for mahseer. He stayed in Burma for twenty-five years, returning to fish for trout in England. This book offers a unique insight into angling during and between two world wars and is enhanced by additional commentary, from his late daughter, the respected anthropologist, Professor Mary Douglas (1921-2007)." Chapters include: The idea of the angler; The angler in Burma; The way of a trout with a fly; Artificial flies; Care of the river; The angler at home; The myth of the sporting fish - an anthropologist's view by Mary Douglas.
