In 1823, after 3 years in Russia, he sailed to America, where he established the Boston Mechanics' Institute in 1826, before finally returning to England in 1836 and establishing the Bungay Mechanics' Institute. Based on his self-improvement experiences in the United States and England, His autobiography was originally published in 1839.
