Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Good. First edition. The first issue of a scarce handbook on the transport of canal goods and different companies across England in the early twentieth century. The scarce first issue of the Handbook on Canals, containing information relating to controlled canals, lists of the towns served by them, and names and addresses of public carriers, compiled by the Canal Control Committee on the Board of Trade. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Contains a folding map of canal routes to the rear. An intriguing source offering knowledge on the use of canals for transporting goods, labour and improvements, as well as listing different canal compies under sub-committees across the country. Already declining as a method of transporting goods due to the rise of rail, the rise of motor caused canals to be abandoned for trade by the 1960s and have since been used for leisure. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, browning and fading to paper wraps, with creases to the edges. A large crease close to front wrapper joint and small creases to top extremity of front wrapper. Small ink inscription to front wrapper. Slight browning and age toning to end papers. Library bookplate to front pastedown. A couple of faint spots and a stamp to folding map. Pages are mostly bright and clean, with slight age toning to leaf extremities. Good. None (ilustrador). book.…

Añadir al carritoFive items, the first four printed and the fifth an ALS. Four of them in good condition, with light signs of age; the fifth (Item Two below) somewhat aged and worn. An account of this abortive scheme first proposed in 1758 is to be found on pp.424-427 of Joseph Priestley's 'Historical Account of the Navigable Rivers, Canals, and Railways, of Great Britain' (1831). The scheme finally failed in 1832, when the bank of Sir George Duckett (see Item Five below) failed, and he became bankrupt. Only the Stort Navigation was completed. ONE: 'London and Cambridge Junction Canal. | Data upon which the Company have founded their Calculations. | June, 1813.' Printed by 'S. Goswell, Printer, Little Queen Street, London.' 7 + [1]pp., 8vo. On two loose bifoliums. Most of the first page is taken up with a 'Rough Sketch of the London and Cambridge Junction Canal. | The dotted Line represents the intended Canal and Branch. The black Lines are the present Navigations.' The text is divided into seven sections: 'I. - Length of the Canal', 'II. - Tolls', 'III Present Trade', 'IV. - Expense of Conveyance', 'V. - Estimate', 'VI. - Profits', 'VII. Future Profits'. Four lines have been scored through (though still legible) in the final section. TWO: 'Plan Explanatory of the London and Cambridge Junction Canal.' Undated (circa 1811). Bifolium, the central two pages of which carry a 31 x 30 cm. map ('Engraved by G. Mills 51 Nelson Sqr. Blackfriars.') captioned: 'Plan shewing the Course of the Proposed London & Cambridge Junction Canal from Bihop Stortford to Clay Hithe Sluice near Cambridge intended to Unite the Ports of London & Lynn also of a Proposed Camal from the above near Cambridge to Bedford and the Grand Junction Canal near Newport Pagnell | Survevyed under the Direction of John Rennie Esqr, C.E.F.R.S. &c &c by Netlam & Francis Giles 1811.' THREE: Drophead title: 'London and Cambridge Junction Canal. | The Directors of this Company are | The Earl of Hardwicke, K.G. | Hon. Richard Neville, M.P. | John Julius Angerstein, Esq. | The Rev. George Jenyns. | James Searle, Esq. | Lieut. Col. Duckett, M.P. | Sampson Hanbury, Esq. | The Rev. James Geldard. | Mr. Atkinson Francis Gibson. | This Canal will connect the entire eastern-side of England (South of Peterborough) with London, [.]'. By 'Wm. Yatman, Chief Clerk and Secretary to the Company.' Undated (circa 1811). 'Printed by the Philanthropic Society, St. George's Fields.' 2pp., 8vo. Bottom half of second page carries an engraved map by'J. & W. Newton, Chancery Lane', captioned 'Blue Lines describe the Existing Navigations. | Red Line describes the London and Cambridge Canal and Branch to Whaddon.' FOUR: Headed: 'London and Cambridge Junction Canal Company, Incorporated by Act of Parliament, 9th June 1812.' 1p., 8vo. 'S. Gosnell, Printer, Little Queen Street, London.' Soliciting subscriptions to shares, 'before the 31st of August 1813'. The text begins: 'The state of public credit last year suspended the exertions of the Company.' FIVE: Autograph Letter in the third person from 'Mr Duckett', i.e. Sir George Duckett (1777-1856), MP for Plympton Erle (the 'Lieut. Col. Duckett, M.P.' of Item Three above), to 'Sir John Harrington [sic]'. From Upper Grosvenor Street, London; 24 June 1813. 2pp., 12mo. Duckett has 'consented to act as Treasurer pro tempore, with a view to take the concern, out of the former Solicitor's hands and to put it upon a better footing'. The person he sent 'to collect percentages, and distribute information' was 'told by Sir John, he has already paid 1 Per Cent', but since Duckett 'cannot find any memorandum amongst his papers of Sir John having paid, Mr Duckett would feel most obliged to Sir John if at his earliest convenience, he would acqiuaint Mr D. To whom, & when he paid it, that it may be regularly credited to his Acct.' Harington has docketed the document: '26 Jun. 1812. | Pd. by Messrs. Birch | L Chambers'. Añadir al carritoFirst proposed by Thomas Horner in 1802, the Regent's Canal was incorporated by John Nash in 1811 in his plans for the development of Regent's Park. Hugely-successful in the nineteenth century despite the rise of the railways, it fell into decline in the early twentieth, but is now firmly established as an amenity of London. The seven items in the present collection are in good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Items ONE to FOUR are printed circulars from Snee, transmitting copies 'of the Resolutions this day passed at the General Assembly of Proprietors of the Regent's Canal'. All from the Regent's Canal Office. Dated: 6 June 1827; 3 June 1829; 2 June 1830; 1 June 1831. The first is preceded by a circular letter from Snee, regarding a share issue to raise funds to pay off the company's debt to the government; the last three contain statements of receipts and expenditure. All four are 3pp., 8vo, on bifoliums, and all are addressed, with postmarks, to 'Sir J. E. Harington Bart. | Berkeley Square.' FIVE: Printed circular letter from Snee. Regent's Canal Office; 18 July 1827. 1p., 4to. Addressed to Harington, with postmarks. Items One to Six are docketed by Harington. Begins 'The Measure adopted at the late General Meeting having produced a Subscription of 8367 Shares, in the proportion of three New for every four Old Shares, amounting to £209,175; and of 3346 Surplus Shares, in case of a deficiency under the 4th Resolution; []'. SIX: Autograph Letter Signed ('Edmund. L. Snee. | Secy.') from Snee to Harington, replying to Item Seven below. Regent's Canal Office; 12 June 1827. 2pp., 4to. Stating, following consultation with the Deputy Chairman, that 'the gross amount of the Revenue, calculated on the average of the last three months, exceeds £30,000 Per Annum. - The ascertained (annual) Expenses of the Concern, amount to about £9,000, but to this must be added the Repairs wear & tear &c. and Expenses of working the Tunnel Engine, making the current outgoings amount altogether to about £12,000.' Continues regarding the 'Surplus Receipts', and states what will be done 'in the event of the requisite Sum not being raised in time to accomplish the Object of paying off the Company's debt to Government'. SEVEN: Autograph Signed Draft of letter from Harington to Snee. Berkeley Square; 11 June 1827. 2pp., 12mo. He finds, regarding Item One above, that 'no clue is therein afforded to form any judgment of the probable surplus receipts, from which a rate of dividend may be reasonably expected, should the sum required or £223,000 be raised in the manner proposed'. It is 'desirable to ascertain if, in the event of the object not being attained by a subscription for so large a number of shares' the deposits on the new shares will be returned. From the Harington papers.…
