Soft cover. Condición: New. 127, 42 pages : illustrations, maps ; 30 cm. The Standing Caliph coinage of the late seventh century has a unique place in Islamic numismatics and in the early history of the Umayyad empire. It is arguably the first truly 'Islamic' copper coinage, but it is very different to all later Islamic coinage in that the coins bear an image of the caliph. The rare examples struck in gold have always excited interest, but the much more common coppers have been somewhat neglected until relatively recently. These coins were often crudely engraved or badly struck and most major museum collections just included a few worn or corroded examples. Consequently the great museum catalogues produced at the end of the nineteenth century only illustrated a handful of examples at the most. The situation improved considerably with the publication of John Walker's British Museum catalogue in 1956, but this is now somewhat out of date, expensive to buy and, at the time of writing, not available on-line. Later catalogues (Ashmolean and Dumbarton Oaks collections) are useful, but not comprehensive. In recent years a number of important articles have been written, but these are scattered across various specialist publications. The net result is that an archaeologist, for example, faced with a worn example of a Standing Caliph coin may need to spend a considerable amount of time in a major numismatic library before he has reliably identified the coin. The aim, therefore, has been to produce a comprehensive, but straightforward, guide to the series which can be read as a narrative by those who are interested, but can also be used to quickly identify and catalogue any Standing Caliph coin. The book is therefore primarily aimed at numismatists, archaeologists and collectors, but it is hoped that it will also be of use to those with a more general interest in early Islamic history and art.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book contributes significantly to the selection of appropriate and controllable cleaning methods for varnished and unvarnished paint surfaces. It is a distillation of many years' experience of formulating a cleaning treatment for any given object. The general principles of the chemistry and the practical applications are described. The methods are applicable to the surface cleaning of both traditional and modern paint media found on sculptures, ethnographic materials, paintings, gilded surfaces and furniture. Aqueous methods are certainly worth considering for those surfaces which cannot be cleaned safely by methods based on solvents. An aid to understanding the selection of solutions where a painting / object cannot be cleaned by more traditional methods. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. What is the real thing in cultural heritage? The papers in this book address the concepts of authenticity and replication for the interpretation, display and conservation of our cultural heritage. In the West the value placed on original materials has been central to our understanding of cultural heritage. While advances in conservation science provide detailed information on the tangible properties of objects, there is a growing emphasis on the importance of their conceptual framework and the context in which they were created. Therefore, we have to consider the value of different ways of representing objects and debate whether one stage of their history should take precedence over others. In this context, the potential use of replication broadens the discussion on authenticity and brings about additional challenges in what circumstances does a replica gain significance as another form of the real thing? While the concept of authenticity continues to be one of the core factors driving decision making in conservation and interpretation, new approaches towards the display and use of collections are challenging conventions, making the roles of curators, conservators, art historians and conservation scientists increasingly complex. The papers in this volume address this dilemma and provide a platform for the continued discussion of this valuable and intriguing subject. The concept of authenticity is one of the core factors driving decision making. Papers in this volume examine five key areas of discussion. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The trade in dyestuffs has played an important role in the economic history of many nations. In medieval Europe this is demonstrated by the important place held by woad in the economy of many countries, but while the woad industry of Toulouse or Erfurt is quite well known, that of Catalonia and Roussillon is rather less familiar. Other aspects of medieval woad dyeing are equally interesting: it is known that the vat contains indigo-reducing bacteria, but how do these bacteria interact with the indigo to make the process work? In fact, identifying the dye present in fragments of aged or degraded textile or in a tiny pigment sample is only half the battle: we are still left wondering how the effects revealed by the analysis were achieved. Thus, madder was widely used in Roman and Coptic Egypt, but which madder? How do the red pigments used to paint the sumptuous glazes on 15th- or 16th-century European paintings relate to the textiles dyed with the same dyes? Some classes of works of art present particular problems because no sample may be taken or because the materials used in the construction of the object are poorly understood or particularly intractable. Many Japanese objects of cultural heritage can only be studied by non-invasive methods, but sometimes this study can be greatly assisted by even a limited amount of analysis, as demonstrated by the discussion of braids used in Japanese armour. The organic pigments used in illuminated manuscripts present a similar problem as they are often difficult to identify by non-invasive methods. Some, such as the anthocyanin blues and exotic dragonsblood, are also not particularly well characterised while others, such as the expensive shellfish purple also found on Roman and Coptic textiles, are tantalisingly rare. These topics are among those discussed in the papers presented at the 21st Meeting of Dyes in History and Archaeology, held in Avignon in 2002, together with discussions on a range of topics from theoretical studies of alizarin complexes to the use of logwood as a biological stain and the use of dyes in West Africa and 18th-century Poland. Topics range from the economic impact of medieval woad in Catalonia and Roussillon to the complexities of madder use in Roman and Coptic Egypt. Case studies include pigment use in illuminated manuscripts, Japanese armour, and European paintings, with a focus on both invasive and non-invasive analysis. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

"Archaeologists now face a myriad of digital ways of engaging with the public - social media, online TV channels, games, etc. It is critical that this potential and its limitations are closely assessed and utilised to make archaeology a genuinely public activity. Archaeology and Digital Communication examines how archaeology engages the public in the rapidly changing world of communication. This volume proposes digital strategies of public engagement that will be of interest to archaeologists working in various contexts, particularly in collaboration with media professionals and institutions. It identifies some of the most promising uses of digital media in different domains of archaeological communication and the benefits they can generate for participants. Each use is presented through case studies highlighting how media experiences are designed and consumed. While providing specific operational recommendations, Archaeology and Digital Communication also attempts to chart potential new directions for research.".…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This book will be of interest to all who seek to further their understanding of iron artefacts, their corrosion, conservation and pigments based on iron compounds, which mankind has used for millennia. The authors take the reader through some of the latest observations on the occurrence and role of compounds of iron - from the hot water undersea vents where the presence of iron pyrites is thought to be vital to the emergence of life on Earth to the discovery of jarosite on the surface of Mars, possibly indicating the occurrence of water; from the pyrophoric surprises one can have when dealing with iron artefacts taken from beneath the sea to the use of a blue oxide of iron as a pigment in mediaeval wall paintings; from rusticles on the Titanic to the analysis of colouring matter on the Turin shroud. The great variety of iron compounds is examined (from the simple oxides to the exotic green rusts, from Prussian blue to yellow jarosites), the corrosion of iron in different environments is discussed and a critical review of the many attempts to conserve iron is presented. This volume will serve as a useful textbook on the subject for many years. A comprehensive exploration of iron compounds, their roles in human history, natural processes, and conservation. Topics include the corrosion of underwater artefacts, preservation of iron objects to the use of iron-based pigments in medieval art. This book is an essential reference for anyone studying or caring for iron artefacts. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Architectural paint research is a field that has grown and expanded beyond painted finishes into the wider realm of architectural finishes. As research continues in the field, periodic paint research conferences help disseminate this information and allow the international community interested in this field to discuss their findings and research. Three days of proceedings included new information on varnishes, paint, glazes, wallpaper, and the replication of historic finishes. Conservation and restoration techniques from countries including Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and China were examined. This book, a compilation of papers presented at the conference, is a continuation of the dedication and desire on the part of the international paint research community to increase the body of knowledge by sharing its latest research.
