Paperback. Square tan wraps w/ mounted color illustration, black English & Chinese printing. 111 pgs w/ primarily color illustrations. Liu Xiaodong, the usually itinerant Chinese painter, has been situated in New York City under lockdown since the middle of February, unable to travel back to his home in Beijing. From a small New York apartment, the artist has made a series of watercolour paintings documenting the changing landscape of the city over the past four months. A keen observer of modern life, Liu Xiaodong has been addressing radical shifts in society for over three decades, commenting on this emerging world through his work, in the manner of a contemporary history painter. The content of Liu Xiaodong's paintings is never transitory; his identified subject matter transpires as in-depth, complex artistic and social projects, be it documenting the life of transsexuals in Singapore (2001) or transgender and transnational artists in Berlin (2018), the forced relocation and supposed progress of Three Gorges Project in China (2003) or the complexities of multicultural life in his London series, Half Street (2013). This new body of work serves as a record of this landmark moment in history: first recording the picturesque, poignant scenes of Spring in New York under the pandemic--with empty children's playgrounds, deserted streets, blossoms falling from the trees, and portraits of his wife and daughter--to the subsequent crowds and zeal of the Black Lives Matter protests that have swept the city, and many others in recent weeks.-- Lisson Gallery (July 2020). Good+ (Wraps are lightly edgeworn/scuffed/smudged; private-ownership stamp on half-title; textblock edges are lightly scuffed/smudged; interior is clean; binding is solid.).…

Hardcover. Condición: As new. Oblong Quarto. Hardcover. Black and white cloth boards. No jacket, as issued. [176] pages : illustrations ; 19 x 26 cm. The first major monograph on American painter Ted Stamm (1944-1984) is a comprehensive survey of the entire Wooster series, including an essay by art historian Alex Bacon and an illustrated chronology of the artist's career. In 1974, Stamm encountered an irregular shape on the pavement on his street in SoHo, a rectangle joined on the left by a slightly shorter triangle. Titled the Wooster series for the location of this revelation, these geometric forms with hard edges furthered the artist's exploration of shaped canvases, formalist elements of the line, and literal as well as depicted shapes. Exhibition: Lisson Gallery, New York, USA (09.03.-14.04.2018).…

Hardcover. Condición: New. In shrinkwrap. Quarto. Illustrated boads, no jacket, as issued. 95 pages : color illustrations ; 28 cm. Newspaper clippings, photographs and more accompany a look back on 50 years of colourful geometrical paintings from Irish-born artist Sean Scully (born 1945).00The career spanning publication reveals formal and conceptual resonances between his earliest grid paintings and his equally innovative recent large-scale works.00Text from Lisson Gallery ?Sean Scully: LA Deep? press release:00?Scully?s so-called Supergrid series of works began while still a student in London and Newcastle in the UK during the 1960s, progressing towards a sophisticated language of overlapping, interwoven stripes painted between taped boundaries. Influenced by his tutor Ian Stephenson, whose dripped and dotted paintings featured in Michelangelo Antonioni?s Swinging Sixties film Blow Up, Scully began working on his own complex, focus-pulling compositions that likewise refused to fully reveal themselves at first sight, allowing only glimpses into its structure and necessitating prolonged viewing times. In epic feats of labor and painterly engineering, Scully built up dozens of horizontal and vertical lines, only to intensify this grid with multiplying layers of crisscrossing diagonals, creating expansive panels that exceeded even his tall frame and bodily span.?00Exhibition: Lisson Gallery, Los Angeles, USA (23.09. - 04.11.2023).…

Softcover. goldenrod portfolio w/ black printing. 12 gate-fold plates. "New Yorkbased painter Stanley Whitney (born 1946) is known for his vivid multicolored abstract paintings, with stacked irregular rectangles of color in a loose grid composition on square-format canvases. In this new slipcased volume, featuring a unique design with 12 gatefolds, Whitney extends his trademark style to a smaller scale. He produces his smaller "afternoon paintings" with the leftover paint after completing a large painting. These works express Whitney's dedication to the consistency of his painting, which he likens to athletic training or the "wood-shedding" that jazz musicians invoke when describing time spent honing their improvisatory skills behind closed doors. Featuring an introductory essay by writer and critic Lynne Tillman, this book provides an intimate, expressive glimpse into the mind of a master when he is "more relaxed, more loose, more carefree."--Amazon. Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 86 pages. Published in 2018. Exhibition Catalog. One of the most beautiful books on the painterly art and achievement of Stanley Whitney. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. A brilliant production by Lisson Gallery NYC: Oversize-volume format. Pristine-white softer cloth boards with red titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. Art by Stanley Whitney. Text by Andrianna Campbell, which is illuminating. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at Lisson Gallery New York City in 2018. Presents Stanley Whitney's "In The Color". Beguiling, vivid, and sensuous work that adapts the Mondrian Grid to suit his singular purpose and to stunning, iridescent effect. "An investigation into Stanley Whitney's profound relationship to color and its spatial effects throughout his career. Color inspires and informs the work of New York artist Stanley Whitney, whose paintings explore the many possibilities created by the tessellation and juxtaposition of irregular rectangles in varying shades of strength and subtlety. Within the composition of these adjacent nodes, a structure that fluctuates between freedom and constraint, between endless open fields and controlled boundaries is ultimately a play between complementing and competing areas of color" (Publisher's blurb). Stanley Whitney works at the rigorous, high standard and level of execution that are worthy of comparison with the greatest colorists in the Western tradition: Matisse, on the one hand, and Howard Hodgkin, on the other, to name only two of his great predecessors. Still, while Whitney himself emphasizes his artistic debt and intimate connection to Western painting, it is surely not accidental that his passionate engagement with color - as well as form, that is to say, "in the color", not merely in color - also owes to his African-American heritage, immanently accessible to him as a given strength: His is "lively" art refined and elevated to an exalted, near-pure abstraction. An absolute "must-have" title for Stanley Whitney collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Stanley Whitney. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Exhibition Catalog available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. One of the most brilliant artists of our time. A fine copy. ISBN 0947830723. Signed by Author.…
