Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In the early 1980s, coal was still the lifeblood of many lines in Yorkshire and the North East, with more than 50 pits still active in the Yorkshire coalfield and more than 20 across County Durham and Northumberland. Operations ranged from the slick merry-go-round services to major power stations such as Drax to small-scale wagonload deliveries to industrial and domestic customers. The steel industry was in full swing, too, with numerous rail-served sites around Sheffield, Scunthorpe and Teesside. The pits closed one by one along with their associated sidings and, in some cases, branch lines. Tyne Dock adapted to industrial change as it switched first from exporting to importing coal and then to importing biomass. Meanwhile, the steel industry is still a major user of rail freight, even though operations on Teesside and around Sheffield are much reduced. Illustrated with over 160 carefully chosen photographs, many of which are previously unpublished, this volume looks at the changing face of rail freight in Yorkshire and the North East. It details the changes in traction, rolling stock and railway infrastructure over four decades. Illustrated with over 160 photographs, this book looks at Yorkshire and the North East s varied freight scene over the last 40 years. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The US Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) rapidly expanded its presence in the 1980s, as it became the most dangerous decade of the Cold War. Most controversially, a new generation of intermediate-range nuclear weapons was deployed by both sides. As tensions between the East and West escalated, a new generation of aircraft arrived at bases across Western Europe - state of the art F-15 Eagle air superiority fighters were followed by the A 10 tank busters and the multi-role F-16 Fighting Falcons. Illustrated with over 180 images, this book examines the aircraft and bases of the USAFE during the 1980s. it also describes the vital support provided by other arms of the USAF, including Military Airlift Command's transport and tanker fleet. The part played by Strategic Air Command's iconic SR-71s, U-2s, and giant B-52 bombers is outlined, as is the role of Tactical Air Command, which would have rapidly reinforced USAFE in time of war. Illustrated with over 180 images, this book examines the aircraft and bases of the USAFE during the 1980s. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In 2021, the British Army's 20-year engagement in Afghanistan ended with chaotic scenes at Kabul International Airport. The Parachute Regiment had been involved since the earliest days of conflict and was there at the end to provide security for the final evacuation. The years of conflict saw the Paras endure some of the toughest operational conditions since World War Two as they confronted Taliban fighters in their Helmand stronghold. In 2008, 2 and 3 Paras were deployed to Afghanistan, fighting the Taliban in areas such as Kandahar and Musa Qala. That summer, they fought the insurgents in the fields and ditches of the Green Zone, always taking the fight to the enemy. Written by a former Para and battlefield photographer, this book takes the reader on a visual journey from training for this deployment in Scotland to the desert heat of Afghanistan, showing the soldiers, their equipment, weapons and vehicles. With over 200 color photographs, it provides a behind-the-scenes look at the Paras both in battle and going about their day-to-day lives at the bases. AUTHOR: Craig Allen, Ph.D., is a research ecologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, specialising in ecosystem dynamics. He is the author of ninety-seven research publications, many about tree mortality, climate-change-related drought and stress in the landscape, and ecosystems in the mountain West. A current project is the "Western Mountain Initiative: Response of Western Mountain Ecosystems to Climatic Variability and Change." With over 200 colour photographs, it provides a behind-the-scenes look at the Paras both in battle and going about their day-to-day lives at the bases. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Born from a need for more B-17s, the war career of Consolidated Aircraft Company's B-24 Liberator began in earnest in January 1942. While it was less well received than the B-17, it could carry a heavier bomb load, had further range, and could take a substantial amount of flak and machine-gun damage. The 8th Air Force, based in the UK, had the largest collection of B-24s, with up to 15 heavy bomb groups. The Royal Air Force turned to mass night bombing and flew it with the aim of destroying entire cities, while the United States Army Air Forces stayed with daylight bombing, relying on the Norden bombsight and the ability of its heavily armed aircraft bombers to protect themselves in formations and, later, with long-range fighter escorts. With more than 180 combat photographs, this book illustrates the B-24 in its various roles and the courage and resilience of the men and machines that flew the daylight-bombing missions in the skies of Europe from 1942 to 1945, in a war where no quarter was given. This book examines one of the two heavy bombers produced by the United States aviation industry during the Second World War. Beautifully illustrated, it shows the B-24 in its various roles across 19421945 and the courage and tenacity of the men that fought the daylight bombing missions in the skies of Europe. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Advances in aerodynamics and jet engine technology after World War Two led to the RAF Air Staff producing an Operating Requirement (OR229) for a bomber that could use these new technologies. To meet this requirement, the Avro Initial Projects team adopted a Delta wing design. This was a major change in aircraft design, as little was known about the Delta wing. The design of the Delta wing Vulcan was a major gamble by all concerned. However, it proved an incredibly valuable asset, especially during the Cold War. It was used in both high- and low-level roles and performed some of the longest bombing and anti-radar missions by the RAF during the Falklands War in 1982. After serving over three decades with the RAF, the Vulcan was retired in1984, but it continued display flying with the Vulcan to the Sky Trust until 2015, delighting the public with its noise and maneuverability. Fully illustrated with over 150 images, this book explores the history of the Vulcan, from concept to manufacture to service, providing insight from those who developed, designed, and flew it. AUTHOR: Historian David W Fildes is an award-winning graphic designer and illustrator. After serving several years in the advertising industry he joined at Hawker Siddeley Aviation in 1972, working at both the Chadderton and Woodford factories previously known as A.V. Roe & Co Ltd. (Avro). In 1995, he was tasked to set up a Heritage Centre at BAE Systems Woodford, which is going from strength to strength. Now known as the Avro Heritage Museum, it records the many achievements of A.V. Roe & Co Ltd. and successor companies. He is a keen enthusiast of Avro and the iconic Vulcan, which he continues to research. Fully illustrated with over 150 images, this book explores the history of the Vulcan, from concept to manufacture to service, providing insight from those who developed, designed, and flew it. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In 1955, the Vulcan B.Mk2 was proposed and a new wing modification was designed to take advantage of the more powerful Olympus engines and a new stand-off missile known as Blue Steel. The new wing was known as the Phase 2C development. Avro were given a contract for an aerodynamic prototype on 10 July 1956, with the first prototype VX777 making its first flight with the new wing on 31 August 1957. This led to a number of significant changes to the B.Mk2 electrical systems, flying controls and structure. The Avro Vulcan was originally designed as a high-altitude medium bomber, but the operating requirement changed when it was required to fly at a low level. Thanks to the Vulcan's inherently low aspect wing and structure, it proved more suitable to this role than the high aspect wings of the Vickers Valliant and Handley Page Victor. This fully illustrated volume looks at the development and history of the Vulcan B Mk2. This fully illustrated volume looks at the development and history of the Vulcan B Mk2. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Following on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100 and London Bus Routes One By One: 101-200, this third volume in the series explores what used to be the old London Transport's highest-numbered block of routes. These numbers were once reserved for single-deck services, but the weight of post-war expansion soon filled in the sequence. As in previous volumes, a potted history of each route is accompanied by a list of points served and one or two pictures of the kind of bus that can be found in service today. The pace of tendering and Transport for London's imperative towards emissions-free propulsion has meant increasingly rapid turnover of bus models, which are expected to last the length of two full-term contracts of seven years before replacement. Illustrated with over 190 color photographs, this volume represents an up-to-date snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene as it stands in autumn 2021. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In 1916, William Boeing officially incorporated his new aircraft business. He successfully sold aircraft to the United States Armed Forces and formed an air transport operation, which used aircraft of his own making. In the lead up to World War Two, Boeing produced some advanced designs, including a pressurized airliner and a large, long-range flying boat. As the war began, Boeing forged ahead with its famous B-17 Flying Fortress bomber and the pressurized B-29 Superfortress. While Boeing had focused on bombers during the war, Douglas and Lockheed had produced troop transports that were easily adapted as airliners for the postwar market. Boeing produced the Stratocruiser to fulfill that role, but it was not as successful as the company wanted, and Boeing continued to try and design an alternative. It was heavily involved in the United States Air Force jet bomber program and, using that experience, designed what became the world's most famous airliner in the form of the Boeing 707. Boeing went from being a company that was not known as a commercial aircraft manufacturer to taking over the market and dominating the airline scene, with aircraft such as the Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. Fully illustrated, this new book edition covers the design, development, and service both military and civilian of two of Boeing's iconic aircraft. The Boeing 707, brought America into the Jet Age of the late 1950s and created the template for worldwide air travel today. This book provides a portfolio of images depicting a wide range of Boeing 707 variants in service around the world, in passenger, cargo and military use, showcasing many of the aircrafts diverse and colourful liveries. The products of General Motors came to dominate locomotive-hauled freight and passenger work in all 32 counties, while electrification transformed travel in and around Dublin. Preservation has ensured that much of what might have vanished in the way of infrastructure, the iconic narrow gauge and a wonderful variety of locomotives is still there to be enjoyed. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The first Iranian airline was started in 1924 by German Hugo Junkers. When the Junkers company closed in 1936, Iranian military pilots had to guarantee the delivery of mail, packages and, occasionally, some passengers. The first truly Iranian airline Iranian Airways took to the skies in 1946. In the 1950s, other private airlines were established by Iranian investors, but in 1963, they were all merged and taken over by the government. During the reign of the Shah of Iran, this airline became a modern carrier, able to compete on the international aviation scene. However, with the revolution in 1979, Western relations were cut off and it was impossible for the airline to buy new aircraft or spare parts. Only creativity and self-sufficiency made it possible for the airline to survive. In 2016, Iran agreed to reduce its nuclear capabilities and Iran Air was able to place massive orders with Boeing, Airbus and ATR to rejuvenate its obsolete fleet. Although Airbus and ATR were able to deliver a few aircraft, the re-instated sanctions against Iran brought all outstanding orders to an abrupt halt. With more than 130 images, this book tells the fascinating Iran Air story from the beginning to the current day, exploring its history and the challenges its faced. Fully illustrated with over 140 images, this book tells the story of Iran s national carrier from its earliest years to the present day. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Turkish Airlines' origins go back to 1933, when the Turkish government established the State Airlines Administration with a fleet of just five aircraft and a staff of 24 people. Initially, the route network only included domestic destinations, but it was soon followed by flights to Nicosia (which has a large Turkish population), Beirut (the financial heart of the Middle East) and Cairo (the political epicenter of the region). In 1956, the airline was restructured and transformed into the current Turkish Airlines. From that moment, the airline started a rapid international expansion. At first, many destinations in Germany were served because of the large number of Turkish workers in that country, but other major European cities were soon added to the network. Of course, the airline has faced many challenges, such as the deregulation of air transport in Turkey, the devaluations of the Turkish currency and domestic political unrest. Geopolitical factors such as the tensions with Russia and the war in Syria may also have caused some issues for the airline's management. With 150 images, this book charts Turkish Airlines' history, showing how it has become one of the largest airlines in the world. AUTHOR: Jozef Mols was born in Antwerp on May 28, 1951. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The five years either side of the millennium was a period of great change on the railway network with the advent of privatization and, on the passenger side, the introduction of franchised operations. On the freight side, the original British Railways network was initially split into three companies - Mainline, Loadhaul and Transrail - but they all ended up being purchased by EWS, the English, Welsh and Scottish Railway. The period saw new rolling stock, new locomotives, and a staggering number of different liveries. Illustrated with over 150 colour photographs, this book records some of the many changes to the main route network in Central Scotland, capturing the last days of some of the older classes before they were phased out and, equally, documenting the new as they came in. By 2005, the railways of Central Scotland had evolved almost beyond recognition when compared with how things had been ten years earlier and in this volume, Ian Lothian provides an interpretation as to how things were and how they have been transformed over a decade. 150 colour illustrations The five years either side of the millennium was a period of great change on the railway network with the advent of privatisation and, on the passenger side, the introduction of franchised operations.
