Table of Contents in back. Pages are clean and intact overall except for some residual pencil annotations on first page, light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and a vertical crease at center (most visible on back pages). Covers are clean and intact overall but back cover is loose and there is moderate chipping along edges and spine and slight darkening. A Very Good copy. This is the eighth annual report of the Society for the Promotion of Collegiate and Theological Education at the West which is an organization that provided financial aid to colleges and theological institutions in the American West. According to the report, it appears that the Society prefers to give aid to Christian colleges. This report contains the proceedings of the Society about various subjects relating to the organization and its work. Given the nature of the Society, much of the information discussed is financial in nature, but there is also a significant amount of text describing the religious and missionary work at these colleges and the perspective that it would better to have Christianity in colleges. Among the concerns that the Society has is its continued existence and how to or whether it should limit the number of applicants who wish to receive financial assistance. There are brief sections of text about different colleges the Society is affiliated with including Marietta College, Illinois College, Wabash College, Beloit College, and Knox College. There is much praise for Christian missionary work and religious teachings at Christian colleges. At least one of the presidents of one of these colleges remarks that Christianity should be incorporated into colleges lest they may become places of "infidelity." The report proceeds to discuss the "great national question" about the recent influx of Irish and German immigrants. The author of the report appears to express apprehension toward "non-American" immigrants but also says that divine providence appears to be allowing said immigration and that it is in the Christian spirit to welcome foreign newcomers. The author fears the increase in "foreign" immigrants might cause an increase of religious infidelity. The author posits how to keeping the nation "pure" amid the "flood" of immigration. They appear to answer that continued Puritan teachings and missionary work is essential to maintain the religious purity of American society.
