Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Second Edition. Xxiv, 470. Ancient Blue Paper Apparently Over Earlier Full Calf, Later Paper Spine, Paper Label With Handwritten Author And Title, And London 1805 Handwritten Below On Spine. A Few Short Pencil Notes On Endpapers, No Other Names Or Marks. Quite Worn, Frayed And Chipped At Corners. Pages With Light Foxing In Text Block, A Few Tiny Spots, Otherwise Clean And Crisp, Edges Of Page Block Retain Original Polish. Per Wikipedia, Richard Payne Knight ( 1751 - 1824) Of Downton Castle In Herefordshire, And Of 5 Soho Square, London, England, Was A Classical Scholar, Connoisseur, Archaeologist And Numismatist Best Known For His Theories Of Picturesque Beauty And For His Interest In Ancient Phallic Imagery. He Served As A Member Of Parliament For Leominster (1780-84) And For Ludlow (1784-1806). An Analytical Inquiry Into The Principles Of Taste, 1805, Was Knight's Most Influential Work In His Lifetime. This Book Sought To Explain The Experience Of 'Taste' Within The Mind And To Clarify The Theorization Of The Concept Of The Picturesque, Following From The Writings Of William Gilpin And Uvedale Price On The Subject. Knight's Views On The Aesthetics Of The Picturesque Are Also Formed In Engagement With Edmund Burke's Emphasis On The Importance Of Sensation, Which Knight Partly Rejects In Favor Of A Modified Associationism. The Philosophical Basis Of Knight's Theories Have Implications For His Account Of The Relationship Between The 'Beautiful' And The 'Picturesque'. For Knight, Aesthetic Concepts Cannot Be Formed Directly From Optical Sensations, Because These Must Be Interpreted Within The Mind Before They Can Be Recognized As Beautiful. Thus A Classical Architecture Roman Temple Is Beautiful Because Of The Proportions Of Its Parts, But These Proportions Can Never Be Perceived Directly By The Senses, Which Will Simply Encounter A Mass Of Confused Impressions. 'Beauty' Is Thus A Product Of Internal Mental Acts. It Is Therefore Proper To Speak Of Moral, Mathematical And Other Non-Sensuous Forms Of Beauty, Contrary To Burke, Hogarth And Others Who Claimed Such Usages Were Metaphorical. In All Cases 'The Particular Object [E.G. Proportion] Is An Abstract Idea.'. …

Añadir al carritoHard Cover. Condición: Near Fine. No Jacket. First Irish Edition. First Irish edition, following the London edition released the same year (Pine-Coffin 784.5). Rebound in quarter linen with new end sheets, modern owner bookplate on front endpaper, faintly foxed throughout. 1789 Hard Cover. vii, [1], 592 pp. 8vo. An 18th century travelogue based on the author's Grand Tour, which was originally published in two volumes in London in 1789. Piozzi was born Hester Lynch Salusbury and previously married to brewer Henry Thrale. She was a member of one of the wealthiest Welsh families of the time, though poor investments led to her father's bankruptcy, which compelled her to marry Thrale. Through the use of his fortune, she became a prominent patron of the arts, and known for her diaries and letters, which would later become an important scholarly source for those studying Samuel Johnson (she met Johnson after becoming a member of London society, the two traveled together, and Johnson wrote her two pieces of verse). She also published a volume about Johnson entitled Anecdotes of the Late Samuel Johnson in 1786. …

Añadir al carritohardcover. Condición: Fair. First Edition. Publication: London, Hunter and Longhurst, 1910. Formatting: 8vo, pp. 189. Condition Report: Good. The red cloth boards exhibit typical wear for a volume of this age, with softening to the corners and notable bumping and fraying to the head and tail of the spine. The gilt lettering and diocesan coat of arms on the front board remain clearly visible, though slightly darkened over time. Internally, the binding remains firm and functional. The text block features an intact top edge gilt alongside untrimmed fore and bottom edges. Noticeable foxing and tanning are present throughout, particularly pronounced on the preliminary leaves and endpapers. Catalogue Note: This is a first edition of Oylerâs architectural survey, featuring a sketch of Canterbury Cathedral by Arnold Fairbairns. The volume contains a previous owner's monogrammed stamp and a handwritten inscription on the front endpaper dated 1954. This note details that the copy was purchased to replace an original bought in Tunbridge Wells in 1921 and lent to a borrower who never returned it. The book has been heavily used as a working copy, featuring extensive pencil annotations throughout, particularly to the title page and the index. Additionally, the volume includes several pieces of laid-in ephemera, such as handwritten research index cards detailing church listings and a 1977 clipping from Country Life on Romney Marsh churches. A comprehensive guide to the parish churches within the Diocese of Canterbury. Through descriptive notes and regional focus, Thomas H. Oyler captures the rich ecclesiastical heritage of Kent in the early 20th century, making it an invaluable reference for local historians, genealogists, and enthusiasts of English church architecture.
