In his preface, Richard Lovell Edgeworth notes his daughter's aim 'to promote, by all her writings, the progress of education, from the cradle t…o the grave', and that the present and envisaged volumes of the series were 'intended to point out some of those errors, to which the higher classes of society are disposed'. A second series appeared in 1812, for which she received £1050 making her the most commercially successful novelist of her age. 3 vols, 8vo (167 × 100 mm), pp. vii, [3], 400; [2], 338; [2], 269, [1], first and last volumes bound without half-titles. A couple of gatherings in each volume just spring, fore-edges consequently very slightly frayed. but all secure. Contemporary tree calf, gilt spines with black morocco labels. Rubbed, joints cracked but secure. A good copy.

With a bookplate to the inner front board of each volume Markshall Ph. Honywood . General Philip Honywood (c.1710 21 February 1785) British army officer who sat in the House of Commons from 1754 to 1784. Honywood was the fifth son of Robert Honywood and his wife Mary Sandford, daughter of Sir Richard Sandford, Bart. and sister and heiress of Sir Richard Sandford, 3rd Baronet of Howgill Castle. He succeeded his brother to the Marks Hall estate in Essex in 1755. He joined the Army as a cornet and rose through the ranks to become a major in 1741. At the Battle of Dettingen in 1743, he received at least twenty-three broadsword wounds and two musket shots which were never removed, distinguishing himself by his personal valour. He was afterwards promoted to a lieutenant-colonelcy in the regiment of his uncle, also Philip Honywood. He took part in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and was seriously wounded at the skirmish at Clifton in 1745. He was promoted colonel in 1752 and awarded the colonelcy of the 20th Foot in 1755 56 and the 9th Dragoons from 1756 to 1759. He was made major-general in 1758, given the colonelcy of the 4th Horse from 1759 to 1782 and made lieutenant-general in 1760. He was Governor of Kingston-upon-Hull from 1766 to his death. He was finally promoted to full General in 1777 and transferred to be Colonel of the 3rd Dragoon Guards from 1782 to his death. Honywood was elected Member of Parliament for Appleby in 1754 and held the seat until 1784. Honywood died in 1785 aged 75. He had married Elizabeth Wastell, but their only child, Philip, who was born 27 June 1760,[3] died aged 19. He left his Marks Hall estate worth nearly £6000 per annum to his cousin Filmer Honywood, M.P. for Kent. Bound in attractive full contemporary calf bindings. Front matter includes a poetic appreciation of the poet in Latin by Sam Barrow M.D.; another in English by Andrew Marvel; The Life of John Milton by Elijah Fenton; and an anonymous discussion of  The Verse form used by Milton. Condition: Good. Leather with marks of age. Wear to edges, with a couple of small holes to spine edge, and small closed tear to head of spine. Small gouge to front opening edge. Inner hinges split but binding firm. Pages browned but legible. Some of the plates are rough-cut and/or torn along the margins, the images unaffected. Offsetting to endpapers. Rear paste down with pencil signature of previous owner. Occasional small corner creases or crumples to page edges. Size: 7x4in / 18x10cm. 324pp. Weight: 395g.

Trattasi probabilmente di una versione di prova o di presentazione…della rarissima pubblicazione "Wood's illustrated guide to London; containing 26 views of the principal public buildings, &c., beautifully engraved on steel, with descriptions in French and English". In questo esemplare le tavole realizzate in acciaio sono state poi stampate con un particolare procedimento di stampa tanto che le stesse risultano impresse leggermente in rilievo su carta patinata applicata su cartoncinirigidi. Ogni tavola presenta una descrizione dell'illustrazione in francese e inglese. Esemplare completo di tutte e 26 le tavole. L'opera venne realizzata in occasione dell'Esposizione Universale di Londra tenutasi appunto nel 1862. L'opera non venne poi probabilmente mai data alle stampe se non in pochissimi esemplari dimostrativi.
