ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "William Fleetwood, (1656-1723), was an English preacher, Bishop of St. Asaph and Bishop of Ely, remembered by economists and statisticians for constructing a price index in his Chronicon Preciosum of 1707. He received his education at Eton and at King's College, Cambridge. Fleetwood was regarded as the best preacher of his time. He was accurate in learning, and effective in delivery, and his character stood deservedly high in general estimation. In episcopal administration he far excelled most of his contemporaries. He was a zealous Hanoverian, and a favourite with Queen Anne in spite of his Whiggism." (Wikipedia). An additional collection . of some thousand words not in the former volume . of proper names of persons and places in Great Britain, with their etymologies . II. An orthographic dictionary. The third edition, with many additions. London: printed for Thomas Cox, at the Lamb under the Royal-Exchange, 1737; pp. [900], A4-5U4,5X2; lexicon in double column; a few woodcut illustrations in the text of a mostly heraldic nature. Together, 2 volumes in in matching contemporary calf, gilt-decorated spines in 6 compartments, old morocco labels in 1; spines rubbed and worn, cracks and small chips at the extremities; and with both title pages with ownership signatures clipped from the top edge, and with ownership signatures and stamps of Gilbert Ogilvy, Jr. on dedication page and first leaf of preface; all else good and sound. A matched set of Bailey's two popular dictionaries, the second, rather enigmatic volume supplementing the first, and not often found together. Volume II is, according to Alston, "a supplementary volume" which "enjoyed a separate publishing existence." Alston V, 103 & 129.
