Quarter Leather. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition of 's Gravesande's Essay on Perspective, first published as 'Essai de Perspective' in 1711. Willem Jakob 's Gravesande (1688-1742) was a Dutch mathematician and natural philosopher. He was Professor of Mathematics, Astronomy and Philosophy at Leiden University and used his position to promote Newton's mathematical and astronomical theories. He is credited with being the first Continental theoretician to disseminate and promote Newton's works. His best known publication 'Mathematical Elements of Natural Philosophy, Confirmed by Experiments' was published in 1720 as the result of his experimental work on Newton's mechanical concepts. This copy is newly bound in quarter calf with raised bands and title label to spine and marbled paper sides. New endpapers have been added. Contents: half title with old signature of W Parry to top; publishers' advert; title; translator's dedication 2pp; author's preface and errata pp i-x; text pp 1-120 with 32 folding plates - plates 30-32 bound after the Finis. The contents are in very good clean condition with light toning to paper - becoming darker towards page edges. There is occasional brown spotting, and an old damp stain mark at the top corner of pp 97, 101 and 103. There some professional paper repairs to plate edges. There are 2 sets of mispagination but the text is continuous: 83-48-85 and 91-26-93. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Wraps. Condición: Good +. Offprint from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1847. Wraps. 10" X 8 1/4". 21pp plus illustrated plate. Disbound in paper wraps; the text is unbound but held together at the edges in two separate gatherings, splitting between pages 8 and 9, else moderate wear to wraps, light foxed and toned, with faint red "18" to upper left of upper wrap and inscription to upper right corner. Ink inscription addressed to "Monsieur [unidentified name], membre de l'Institut, de la part de [missing portion]." While the recipient's identity remains uncertain, the inscription suggests it was presented to a member of the Institut de France. An important early work in the history of electrochemistry and the development of fuel cell technology, in this landmark Bakerian Lecture, Sir William Robert Grove (1811-1896) explores the decomposition of water into hydrogen and oxygen through heat and voltaic ignition. Building upon his earlier work on the gas voltaic battery (1839), Grove's research laid the foundation for fuel cell technology by demonstrating the direct conversion of chemical energy into electricity-an insight that would not be fully realized until the 20th century. Offprints of Grove's papers are scarce, and this example represents a key moment in the study of electrochemistry and alternative energy, with a possible presentation/association inscription. Offprint from Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, 1847.

A substantial and historically important collection of the medical writings of the Scottish physician and scholar Archibald Pitcairne, one of the leading proponents of iatrophysical medicine in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Educated at Edinburgh and Leiden, Pitcairne sought to explain bodily functions through mechanical and mathematical principles, heavily influenced by Newtonian science and the circulation theories of Harvey. This 1715 English translation gathers together his influential medical dissertations, lectures, case studies, and theoretical writings, including discussions on the circulation of the blood, fevers, respiration, anatomy, and the philosophical foundations of medicine. Particularly notable is the appended treatise on the treatment of smallpox, a subject of immense importance in the pre-vaccination era. The volume offers a vivid snapshot of Enlightenment medical thought at a moment when physicians increasingly attempted to reconcile empirical observation with mechanical philosophy. Pitcairne's work was deeply influential upon later physicians in both Britain and continental Europe, especially within Edinburgh's medical tradition. This copy retains attractive contemporary blind-paneled calf boards and bears several early ownership inscriptions. Condition & Binding: Contemporary full calf with elaborate blind-paneled decoration to covers and raised bands to spine. Front board detached; rear board holding but worn. Binding heavily rubbed and scuffed with notable edgewear, surface abrasion, and wear at corners and joints. Spine worn with some loss and cracking. Internally, the text is complete but heavily affected by old dampstaining throughout, especially to preliminary and terminal leaves, with staining extending through much of the text block. Scattered foxing, toning, and handling wear throughout. Several early manuscript ownership inscriptions appear to title page and endleaves. Overall- poor to fair.
