Here are stories from every period of his career, in an array of genres: here are a little legend from the middle ages, a parody of those beloved Edwardian travellers' tales, an imagined moment from the life of an English poet and a visit from an English novelist. Here are a ghost story about memory, and an SF story, also about memory. And a final fable about how only the brave deserve the fair. The seven stories here collected for the first time are distinct pieces with different ambitions -- some bright gems, some dark -- but read them and discover the subtle lights that link them, the obsessive themes of twenty years in a writer's life: memory, time, loss, and the hope in writing." Octavo, cloth. First edition. A presentation copy with signed inscription by Crowley to David G. Hartwell on the title page: "For David -- / John Crowley / WFC 93." Additionally inscribed to Hartwell by the book's editor, Ron Drummond, on the front free endpaper. "Crowley is best known for his novels, which tend to be long and intricately plotted, but he is also capable of creating quality work of shorter lengths. Thus the seven fantasy and science fiction stories collected here perhaps give readers a greater appreciation of the strength of Crowley's imagination, erudition, and literary style while not getting swept up in a complex story . Each story here is a small well-crafted gem, highly allusive yet not obtrusively so, full of emotion -- mostly longing and especially wonder, a response fantasy airs for but rarely achieves with the force Crowley is able to supply." - Barron, ed., Fantasy and Horror (1999) 7-84.
