Since the 1930s, the Alpine Guides who created it have had a precise idea of what it should be: a way of enabling non-mountaineers to stay in the mountains without having to summit the peaks. With this new project, the main peaks of the Brenta group can be combined into a 6-day high altitude traverse or, alternatively, climbed individually as variants to the existing Via delle Bocchette. This new edition has changed in look and organization while maintaining its original, well received characteristics. Just two years after publication of the first edition it was already time for a second. The…availability of substantial new material and the desire to integrate the inevitable corrections, some purely editorial, others (thankfully few) involving clarifications and modifications to the route descriptions, led to the decision not to run a simple reprint. Bearing in mind that many "old" readers only recently purchased the first edition, it was decided to sub-divide the new edition into two volumes, "Western Dolomites (Volume 1)" and "Western Dolomites (Volume 2)", the first being a corrected reprint of the previous edition, and this second volume including all the new descriptions which, thanks also to the help of our generous collaborators, had been collected in the period from publication of the first edition (2009) to the present. This means that our established "mid-grade" readers can acquire all the new material without having to buy both books. Obviously, new readers (and virtually all readers of the English editions) are unaffected in this way. The only resulting "oddity" is that both volumes cover exactly the same geographic area. Furthermore, a small number of descriptions from the original edition were, for various reasons, significantly changed and consequently these have been "moved" to the present Volume 2 of the new edition where they completely replace the original descriptions. Again this is irrelevant for the English editions. Without going into unnecessary details, it is noted that the characteristics of the guide, which most readers appear to like, remain the same. Many thanks to all the friends who collaborated in the realization of this second volume, resulting in the addition of a few slightly more difficult routes, and in a few new areas, suitable for "mid-graders" who occasionally enjoy something a bit more demanding. As usual, there is a lot of additional material at the website www.quartogrado.com, where any corrections (hopefully few) will also be published. All possible care was taken so that this second edition is useful both to those already in possession of the first edition and new readers. For centuries, it was known as Mont Maudit, Mont Mallet, Mont Malay - names that commanded both fear and respect. The date of that first ascent - 8 August 1786 - is traditionally considered the birth of modern mountaineering.Today Mont Blanc is a symbol, a name that automatically evokes the concept of mountains and summits. Easily observable from the surrounding valleys, like most spectacular mountain ranges Mont Blanc has also become a somewhat stereotypical image. The dense network of paths often take hikers away from the fortresses of ice and rock that form the massif itself, often the exclusive domain of mountaineers, yet these paths nonetheless enable those who tread them to understand the great complexities of this mountain range, to discover its secrets, and to explore its grand and surprising landscapes. Broad grassy ridges, small summits, glacial shelves and scenic valleys offers all visitors the chance to admire vast horizons and to appreciate the sheer complexity and diversity of the Mont Blanc microcosm. Meanwhile, the solitary valleys and silent hollows of the La Thuile valley and the paths that encircle the base of the Valdigne mountains offer an even more authentic experience of the entwined stories of human and nature. Die bekanntesten und schwierigsten Klettersteige gehören zu den am stärksten begangenen Alpenrouten, dazu gehören besonders die Klettersteige Mesules, Piazzetta und Brigata Tridentina im zentralen Sellastock, oder die Steige entlang der Felswände des Colac bzw. des Col Ombert. Viele Bergwanderer entscheiden sich auch für die Kesselkogel-Klettersteige oder für den ersten Abschnitt der relativ unschwierigen, aber dafür ausgesprochen reizvollen Tour des Bepi Zac-Wegs. Was kann man in diesen Tälern noch empfehlen, wo einem zuweilen das Gefühl beschleicht, der Schönheit und der täglichen Mediendarstellung überdrüssig zu werden Zunächst sollte man die bekannteren Klettersteige dazu nutzen, einige der erstaunlichsten Alpenberge kennenzulernen, und erst später den friedlichen wie panoramareichen Monzoni-Kamm versuchen, wo man auf den grasbewachsenen Kämmen über Vulkangestein und Kriegserinnerungen stolpert, die wunderschöne Tour mit dem Ombreta-Klettersteig wagen, oder aber in den kleinen Felswald der Vallaccia-Gruppe eintauchen.
