Twenty years after his father s passing, Joe Reich stumbles upon a video interview that reveals astonishing truths his father never spoke about in life. In its haunting accounts, Reich learns that, only days after the German invasion of Poland in 1939, his father faced a firing squad and survived. The horrors that followed left him utterly alone, yet anchored by a cryptic prophecy promising that he would reach old age in a distant land. Against all odds, he fulfilled that destiny. Drawing on extensive research and numerous consultations, Reich weaves a vivid portrait of his father: an extraordinary man, Holocaust survivor, and devoted family patriarch. More than a remarkable survivor s tale, this book explores the essential power of memory and the crucial lessons history imparts. Uplifting and profound, this is the story of conquering life s darkest trials through resilience, hope and relentless determination. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The book begins in the last day of 1999, when a survivor Grandmother in Tel Aviv shares her tragic life story as a hidden child in a pit, with only a rat for company with her granddaughter. The day after 2000 already the granddaughter tells the legend of Girl and Rat to her teacher and in 2009 those who heard it through her classmates establish an internet website with poems. From now on this memory is spread all over the world and becomes a myth. In 2099 a future anthropologist discovers it and tries to uncover its mysterious roots. In her research, she reveals the first man who created this myth Unlike other Holocaust-related books that focus on the historical horrific events, this novel deals with the act of remembering them. It resembles a relay race in which the characters transfer memory from one another while travelling on the axis of time. In the near future, on an overpopulated Earth, nearly ruined by mammoth natural disasters brought about by global warming, citizens in the "new throwaway society" are encouraged to commit suicide. Those who sign up with Rhinestone Productions as "terminals" are paid a fee to download their persona into virtual reality "splatties," snuff films in which most are killed, often by Calloway, Rhinestone's leading "splattie" star. But some "terminals" are good killers and don't care about others: they don't stick to the script, and they might snuff Calloway just for kicks and still collect a bonus payout. John Tully'sDark Clouds on the Mountain is a finely written detective story that carries its reader along with an intriguing plot, a gallery of memorable characters, and strange presentiments of evil. Through this last quality, Tully reveals the old Hobart Town that still lies behind the modern Hobart. This gives the novel a dimension in time that does not detract from the immediacy of its portrayal of social, family and political disturbance in the contemporary world. Its fast-moving narrative takes us into the heart of a Tasmania as much embroiled in the contemporary globe as in its particular past. (publisher blurb).

Every year for over a decade Goldenberg, a white middle-aged doctor, has spent numerous periods working as a relieving doctor for Aboriginal communities in remote places. On these visits he has observed and recorded Aboriginal Australians lives without resorting to simplification or glib solutions. Among his true stories we meet psychoticElijah who believes he is Satan s boss and cannot die; a dehydrated baby whose mother gambles away money for food; an old lady who receives a gashed head while fending off a thief stealing her money - her husband. In the midst of tragedy, suffering and moral ambiguity, these stories also tell of cultural richness and common humanity. Goldenberg writes: Aboriginal Australians are not at peace. They are variously unwell, underfed, overfed, afflicted excessively by our lifestyle diseases, confused by our drugs and drink, endowed with income but not with work, living in sickening poverty in paradisiacal places; and distracted from their serious cultural business by the trappings of our serious cultural emptiness. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This memoir is about the relationship between a mother, Lillan, who is the wife of a diplomat, and her only child, Eva. At its heart is the daughter s attempt to comprehend what her mother meant by her oft-repeated warning, never marry a diplomat . While enjoying the privileges of the diplomatic life, having maids and travelling to different countries, Eva found living in foreign countries for extended periods had negative effects on them both, which are gradually revealed. Lillan had to give up a career of her own. Through growing up in Sweden and the United States, Eva adopted a dual persona, with the American one becoming dominant. This eventually led to her marrying someone from the other side of the planet, and a life-long separation from her mother. Lillan wondered what would have happened if her husband had chosen a career other than diplomacy, which would have kept the family together in one place. Would their lives have taken a completely different path? This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

It was deemed by a survey of the Library of Congress to be one of the ten most influential books in America . This volume introduces and presents translations of a number of important but less well-known writings by Viktor Frankl, translated from the original German, in which he forthrightly relates psychology to religious concepts. These cast a strong new light on the generally received understanding of Frankl s contribution to psychology logotherapy as well as its relationship to the soul and universal ethics.ABOUT THE AUTHORS:Rabbi Dr Shimon Cowen, son of a former Governor-General of Australia, Sir Zelman Cowen OBM, has a dual background in secular and religious studies. Holocaust survivor Viktor Frankl is famous for his celebrated 1946 memoir Man s Search for Meaning an examination on what the gruesome experience of Auschwitz taught him about the primary purpose of life: the quest for meaning, which sustained those who survived, and is still a vital tool in psychological practice. Growing up in the working-class waterfront suburb of Port Melbourne, Frank Vincent became aware very early of the impact of social and economic inequality. He went on to become a successful barrister practising in criminal law before being appointed to the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal. Throughout his career, which included a lengthy period as Parole Board Chair, he never lost his concern for victims and the marginalised in our society, especially its Indigenous members. Yet this memoir is no hagiography. With modesty and wit, Vincent notes his own human fallibility and frailties, and writes with modesty and humour. What the critics said:"Frank Vincent s memoirs illustrate why lawyers would enter courts to hear him speak firstly as a barrister in murder trials, then as a Supreme Court Justice."His story is told with grace and humour, pointing out his closest brush to physical danger was from a cream sponge he felt was about to be thrown by a prisoner on learning his parole application was rejected. This book gives a rare insight into our court system from a master practitioner. For more than 50 years Frank was a champion of the people - this book shows he remains a champion bloke."- John Silvester This item is printed on demand.
