Classic, award winning historiography by Juanita Pulsipher Brooks (1898 - 1989). Biography of Illinois-born, early Mormon convert John Doyle Lee (1812 - 1877), who was executed for his role in the controversial Mountain Meadows Massacre in which Mormons massacred California-bound immigrants in southern Utah. Lee was a friend of Church founder & prophet Joseph Smith, and "adopted son" of Brigham Young. In 1857 the U.S. Army was dispatched to Utah in response to outcrys of Mormon dominance; this raised Mormon fears that the final annihilation of the faithful was at hand. In this electric climate a wagon train of some 120 gentile immigrants were annihilated by combined Mormon and Paiute forces. For his participation. Lee, is ultimately executed two decades later after two trials of immense personal suffering through communal punishment, and being branded as a hunted man. Enshrouded in the uncertainty of historical accuracy is also Brigham Young's role in first covering up the massacre, standing behind Lee, to finally condemming his "adoptive son" to exile & excommunication. Lee remained religious; he was a contributing, leading pioneer, and a scapegoat to many.

His telling of the politics, the behind-the-scenes details, and even actual conversations, makes it good reading as well as living history." - David Brower.
