Waterschoot works his way around romantic scenery using l'heure bleue and blue neon, turning the real into the unreal. More and more exotics pop up, the aesthetic becomes uncanny, and the garden becomes unkempt until it finally blurs into impenetrable wilderness. The quiet voyage reminds us of a theatre backdrop, a midsummer night's dream, Alice, or even Where the Wild Things Are, but at its core, a personal story lies hidden. The book contains 96 images with field notes by the photographer and an essay by Prof. Jürgen Pieters (Ghent University).Text in English and French.

Twice by Jacques Sonck brings together duo-toned portraits of people in twos and threes that Jacques Sonck photographed on the street over the course of thirty years. Jacques Sonck shoots classical analogue black-and-white portraits with an eye for the extraordinary. His oeuvre is a celebration of the diversity of humankind. Sonck is attracted by people who stand out from the crowd, either by an anomaly in their appearance or by their extrovert attitude and Twice demonstrates diversity and his anthropological taste within photography. His eccentric models are unique individuals who walk the border of 'normality'. Although his work is often compared with that of Diane Arbus, who photographed humans on the margins of society, Sonck is more interested in the physical appearance than in the social position of his subjects. In English and French.

Although his work is often compared with that of Diane Arbus, who photographed humans on the margins of society, Sonck is more interested in the physical appearance than in the social position of his subjects. In English and French. AUTHOR: Jacques Sonck (01949) finds his exceptional models on the streets of Belgian cities like Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels, and photographs them on the spot, often in front of a neutral background. Regardless the volatile and anonymous nature of these encounters, Sonck's subjects pose with full surrender, pride and self-confidence. Often these portraits have a humorous undertone, stealing a grin from the viewer. In other cases Sonck confronts his audience with deformed individuals, evoking feelings of shame and discomfort. Notwithstanding the confrontational nature of these portraits, Sonck is never guilty of voyeurism or ridicule as he approaches his subjects with distance, without judgment but with a certain softness and respect. From the 1990s onward Sonck started inviting his models into his studio, where he photographs them in front of a simple dark background with artificial light. In these purified photographs he focuses more on faces and or even body parts. These are more classical, timeless images, in comparison with his street photographs in which clothing and background often give away the timing. Jacques Sonck is represented by Gallery FIFTY-ONE, Antwerp. SELLING POINTS: . A classical analogue black-and-white street portrait photobook, documenting people in twos and threes . Staring Into the Night is a book that brings together Amelie Bouvier's research and artistic work inspired by astronomical stories and the history of sky observation, from the late 19th century to the present day. Amelie was particularly interested in the collection of astronomical photographic glass plates at Harvard College Observatory in the United States, which she was able to visit in 2019. Its contents have fueled her imagination for the past five years and form the basis of her latest projects, which explore the history of observation, our link to representation and scientific imagery, and the issues that shape our collective memory and heritage. Text in English and French. AUTHOR: Amelie Bouvier grew up in Portugal, studied at the Institute des Arts in Toulouse (FR) from which she graduated with a DNSEP in 2008. She has had several noteworthy exhibitions including those at The Arsenal Gallery (Bialystok, PL), Aomori Contemporary Art Center (JP), Biennale Chroniques 2022 (Aix-en-Provence, FR), Sesc Ipiranga (Sao Paulo, BR), Museo Patio Herreriano (Valladolid, ES), the Verbeke Foundation (Kemzeke, BE) and Museu Da Cidade (Lisbon, PT). Her work has been included in the 16th Cerveira International Art Biennial (PT). She is the winner of the 2016 Hors-d'oeuvre prize, awarded by ISELP (Brussels, BE). Her first monograph will be published in early 2024. Today Amelie lives and works in Brussels, where she teaches at the Royal academy of Fine Arts. Her work is represented by Harlan Levey Projects, Brussels. Amelie Bouvier's artistic practice builds from historical research in the field of astronomy to question issues related to cultural memory and collective heritage. Astronomers in particular, and scientists in general, don't only explain the world, they also represent it through the construction of diagrams, illustrations, photographs or equations. For Bouvier, scientific imagery is an extension of knowledge that reveals ideological and ethical frameworks, which risk cloaking aspects of the reality they aim to represent. She is particularly interested in the sky and stars as a landscape that exposes current socio-political contradictions and knowledge gaps. While her work is based on historical facts, data and visuals, she consistently mixes this with speculative imagery, adapting tools and techniques to present alternative potentialities. Amelie Bouvier is represented by Harlan Levey projects, Brussels, Belgium. SELLING POINTS: . Although it gives the impression of a veil being lifted, it is simply a record of my personal experience. The intention, through these hundreds of photos, is to transcribe the absurd, crazy and little-known world of modelling, by means of an unpublished souvenir album of my time spent in fashion. The result is THANK YOU BYE, which owes its name to the phrase uttered by casting directors every time you walk in front of them. It recounts my moments of sadness, my anxieties, my unease, my questions, but also our laughter, our travels, our togetherness, our mutual support. Five years during which I fought not to lose myself. Thrown at the age of 18 at a speed I found hard to manage into a dimension that was not my own, I embrace all the models who 'pose' in this book and who, without realising it, helped me to escape. What you hold in your hands is none other than the last chance to prove that I was still worth something. When you turn the last page, you'll know that I've resigned and can finally say that I'm happy." - Clémentine Balcaen.

Jet black hair, porcelain skin, bright red lips and fingernails; figures gazing intensely into the camera; young men and women posing acrobatically with bizarre props; animals and plants in the glaring light of the camera's flash, situated in urban landscapes, private spaces, or in nature, among rice fields, lotus ponds, and cacti - Ren Hang's photographs are painfully provocative, but also inward looking and dreamily surreal. Ren Hang depicts the human body as an abstract form, often in idiosyncratic arrangements and perspectives, combining iconic images of William Shakespeare's dying Ophelia in a river; of Leda, daughter of a Greek king, and the Swan; and of female nudes seen from behind using a distinctive visual vocabulary that draws on abstraction, Surrealism, Dada, and both historic and contemporary photography. Ren Hang's analog photographs use a playful, humorous visual language to relate the feelings, desires, fears, and loneliness of a young generation in China. AUTHOR: Ren Hang (1987 2017) was a Chinese photographer and poet. During Ren's incipient career, he was known mostly for nude photographic portraits of his friends. His work is significant for its representation of Chinese sexuality within a heavily censored society. For these erotic undertones, he was arrested by PRC authorities several times. He received the backing of the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who included Ren in his 2013 Netherlands show, Fuck Off 2 The Sequel, and curated the photographer's 2014 exhibition in Paris, France. Ren's erotic, playful and casual yet provocative expression gained him worldwide fame. Ren was born in 1987, in a suburb of Changchun, Jilin province, in northeastern China. In 2007, in order to relieve the boredom of studying advertising at college, he bought a point-and-shoot camera and began shooting his friends. As a self-taught photographer, he said his style of photography was inspired by the artist Shuji Terayama. Ren suffered from depression. He posted a series of diary entries titled My depression on his blog, recording the fear, anxiety and internal conflicts he experienced. Ren died by suicide on February 24, 2017 in Beijing. SELLING POINTS: . One of China's most famous late photographers: Ren Hang has gone down in photography's ever expanding history book as one of the most defining image makers of his generation . Contemporary portraiture revealing playful compositions of friends and flatmates entirely nude . Photographed with a snapshot film camera, Ren Hang's photographs are simple but simultaneously highly intriguing and compelling 53 colour illustrations For My Mother brings together 51 photographs selected by Ren Hang in homage to his mother. Although carefully staged, these images are imbued with an element of transience and evanescence. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
