Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 1st. 128 pages, illustrations; 24 cm. Firm binding, clean text. Previous owner's signature/inside front cover, otherwise unmarked. *** "Jacques Lipchitz (1891-1973) is recognized as the most significant Cubist sculptor of the twentieth century. While other contemporaries such as Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Joszef Csaky and Henri Laurens for a time explored ideas related to Cubism, it was Lipchitz who embraced the movement's language and consistently translated its ideologies into sculptural forms. A Jewish immigrant, Lipchitz arrived in Paris in 1909. There he battled against rampant prejudice and the volatile art world to establish himself as one of the capital's most succesful and prominent avant garde artists. His relationship with Picasso was a ferment of mutual admiration, curiosity and influence - many of Lipchitz's motifs derived from Picasso's canvases, while Picasso respected Lipchitz's views on his own sculpture. The threat of Hitler's troops prompted Lipchitz to move to America in 1941, where he stayed until his death in 1973. Taking nothing but one or two maquettes, Lipchitz successfully rebuilt his career and became recognized as the grand old man of Cubism and a pioneer in a new cross-cultural view of art. He was also considered a master at setting up a dialogue between outdoor monumental sculpture and its surrounding environment or architecture. / Catherine Putz, Exhibitions Coordinator, Tate Britain, UK. Dr Putz has edited and translated a selection of Lipchitz s correspondence (privately printed) and contributed several articles on Lipchitz to recent exhibition catalogues." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Jacques Lipchitz: the first Cubist sculptor?; The optimistic Cubist; The Promethean paradox; The Lipchitz gift to the Courtauld Gallery 2002; Letters from Lipchitz's studio. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 182 pages, illustrations (some colour); 29 cm. Exhibition held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., October 11, 1995 to January 7, 1996, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, February 4 to April 28, 1996. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Moderate shelfwear to wraps, age toning. Another copy available. Profusely illustrated. *** "John Singleton Copley is well known in America as the creator of the finest portraits of the Colonial era. Less well known is the fact that he left America in 1774, when the impending armed struggle between the Colonies and England threatened to destroy his livelihood, and settled in London to pit himself ambitiously against the Old Masters and the English giants of the day. Copley's English career was long and brilliant - and represents the most important period of his working life. During the forty-one years he spent in England, Copley created his great masterpieces of history painting and portraiture that stand as key monuments of British painting. From the earliest days of his career in London Copley realized that he would have to do everything possible to stand out in a crowded field of painters and create works that would bring him instant notice. This he did with his first great English picture, The Copley Family (1776-77) and, even more dramatically, with the landmark Watson and the Shark (1778). He quickly mastered the elements of the fashionable English style of painting, exchanging the tight and linear handling of the Colonial period for one more fluid and expressive. By the 1780s Copley was reckoned one of the most important painters working in England, a clear rival to his compatriot Benjamin West. With his masterpiece, The Death of Major Pierson (1784), Copley assumed a place of primacy in the field of history painting. While William L. Pressly gives a balanced, up-to-date exposition of Copley's English career, Emily Ballew Neff examines his masterpiece, The Death of Major Pierson, in particular detail, and is the author of the catalogue of his major English works. This is a long overdue study of this important painter." - Publisher. Size: 4to.…

Paperback. Condición: Fine. 1st. 159 pages, illustrations (chiefly colour); 26 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the Courtauld Gallery, London, October 21, 2010 to January 16, 2011, and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, February 9 to May 8, 2011. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "Paul Cezanne's famous series of paintings of peasants playing cards has long been considered among his most important and powerful works. The image of seated peasants, still and seeming silent, concentrating on their game of cards, can be seen as the human counterpart to the landscapes of Cezanne's home countryside, notably Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which held such iconic significance for him. The two most ambitious versions show three card players, with spectators; in the other three the subject is distilled into a simpler form, with two figures facing each other, seen in profile, as in the Courtauld masterpiece. This catalogue accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery, London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, that will be the first to bring together the majority of these remarkable paintings alongside a magnificent group of Cezanne's closely related portraits of Provencal peasants and rarely seen preparatory oil sketches and drawings." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Cezanne's Card Players: an introduction, by Nancy Ireson and Barnaby Wright; Cezanne's development of the Card Players, by Aviva Burnstock, Charlotte Hale, Caroline Campbell and Gabriella Macaro; Cezanne's Card Players: art without anecdote, by John House; He painted, by Richard Shiff. Paperback. Condición: Fine. 1st. 96 pages, colour illustrations; 28 cm. Catalogue of an exhibition held at the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College, October 3 to December 12, 1999; and other venues. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "Reflecting the seismic changes in Ireland's political, social, economic, and cultural realities of the 1990s, contemporary Irish artists have begun to redefine identities, raising questions about the relationships between male and female, urban and rural, North and South, history and the present. The struggle over identities, which used to marginalize Ireland and societies like it, has now become central to debates around the globe. This strikingly illustrated book presents a reading of Irish art in the 1990s and examines the repositioning of Irish identity in works drawn primarily from the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. The artists examined, including Kathy Prendergast, Willie Doherty, and Alice Maher, have initiated a dialogue with their own society and others beyond Ireland, using painting, photography, sculpture, video, and installation to explore subjects ranging from the personal and poetic to the political. Their concerns - and the way they are conveyed through non-traditional materials and new interpretations of more conventional media - link these works to new art being made elsewhere in the world. This publication accompanies an exhibition touring the United States and Canada." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: Renegotiating the given, by Decla McGonagle; Ireland, by Fintan O'Toole; Poetics, politics, and Irish art: thirteen questions, by Kim Levin. *** Includes: Dorothy Cross - Willie Doherty - Mark Francis - Ciaran Lennon - Alice Maher - Caroline McCarthy - Fionnuala Ni Chiosain - Abigail O'Brien - Maurice O'Connell - Alanna O'Kelly - Kathy Prendergast - Billy Quinn - Paul Seawright. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Sussex, the only place outside London where Blake ever lived, inspired a wide body of extraordinary work, done for new and existing patrons and ranging from the familiar to the rarely considered. Accompanying the first exhibition devoted to the subject, William Blake in Sussex considers the collective significance of the English county to the life and work of the the celebrated artist and writer. Disillusioned with London life and struggling to make a living, Blake and his wife Catherine went in 1800 to live at the coastal village of Felpham, which the artist soon described as "the sweetest spot on earth." Providing his principal encounters with both English rural life and the coast, the artist's three years "on the banks of the ocean" informed his two greatest illustrated epic poems, Milton and Jerusalem, and continued to be reflected in his work for the rest of his career: "In Felpham," claimed Blake, "I saw and heard Visions of Albion". In addition to the work associated with Felpham, this publication considers the collections of nearby Petworth House, which include three major paintings by Blake - otherwise unrepresented in other grand houses of Britain - along with related prints, books and archival material. The authors will examine the relationships formed by Blake in Sussex, particularly with the poet William Hayley, the sculptor John Flaxman, the 3rd Earl of Egremont (one of the great collectors of contemporary art in the early 19th century) and his estranged wife Elizabeth Ilive, who commissioned two of the three paintings now in Petworth. Blake's work for Hayley, often dismissed as illustrative and decorative, will be reappraised, and other projects he worked on in Sussex - including remarkable biblical watercolors produced for his great London patron, Thomas Butts - will be celebrated. Blake's infamous arrest and trial for sedition - chief among the events profoundly affecting him in Sussex - will be discussed. It is not widely known that Blake was tried first in Petworth, where he was vouched for by the 3rd Earl. Accompanying the fi rst exhibition devoted to the subject, William Blake in Sussex considers the collective signifi cance of the English county to the life and work of the the celebrated artist and writer.
