Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Elegant sailing ships, expansive seascapes, crystal - clear spread - out views of architecture with his unique pictorial language and range of subjects Lyonel Feininger became one of the most important artists of Classic Modernism, whose works remain very popular to this day. It was in Paris that Lyonel Feininger (1871 1956) abandoned his successful career as a caricaturist and began a life as an independent artist. Initially his pictures are peopled with grotesque, wild, travesty - like figures inspired by the street scenes of Paris. Shortly afterwards he discovered the typical pictorial subjects which would make him world-famous. Seldom has Feiningers artistic development from his early works to his last pictures in the United States been shown with such brilliance. With unpublished photographs and extracts from the unpublished diary of his wife Julia, this artist monograph provides an in-depth insight into the life and work of Feininger and will even surprise those who are familiar with his art. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Hardcover. Condición: As new. Small quarto. Hardcover. Matte illustrated boards. No jacket as issued. 127 pages : illustrations (chiefly color), facsimiles, portraits ; 26 cm. Frederic Church gained fame and fortune with his large, panoramic landscapes, which were public spectacles seen by thousands. This exhibition innovatively highlights his lesser-known works: intimate landscapes memorializing the dead, whose primary audience was often a handful of individuals. Church painted these memorial landscapes throughout his career, crystallizing nineteenth-century America's pursuit of spiritual transcendence through the natural world. For Church and his family, this ideal was vividly realized at Olana, his Hudson Valley home and designed landscape. Today, Olana remains largely unchanged, enduring as Church's quintessential landscape of memory"--From page [4] of cover.…

Paperback. Pale blue wraps. 200 pp. Profuse color and bw plates. "The immensely rich art collection of Joseph Smith (1674-1770) has until now remained largely unknown except to a few specialists concerned with Venetian eighteenth-century art. In this volume a selection of sixty of his finest drawings (by Italian masters from Raphael to Canaletto) are discussed and illustrated, in some cases for the first time. The drwaings are still part of the British Royal Collection, having been puchased from Smith by King George III in 1762, together with the rest of Smith's library and collection of paintings, gems, coins, medals and illuminated manuscripts."--Jacket. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Chocolate Girl is one of the most famous works by the Swiss artist Jean-Etienne Liotard. This richly illustrated volume leads the reader through the age in which it was created during the French-inspired Rococo and into the Vienna of Empress Maria Theresia, where the work was painted. It also explains the art of pastel painting, in which this enchanting work has been executed. The painting had a tremendous effect in those days, and still does so today. Even during Liotards life (1702 1789), his pastel painting was highly valued, as the description by the most famous pastel artist Rosalba Carriera as the most beautiful pastel demonstrates. The Chocolate Girl shows a simple, unknown domestic servant, until then a rarely chosen subject. In its sober and precise observation it reflects the art of the Enlightenment as well as anticipating the realism of the nineteenth century. Chocolate itself, always associated with pleasure, contributes further to the particular charm. Characteristic works from other creative periods complete the overview of Liotards oeuvre. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Hardcover. black & red pictorial boards w/ white printing. 142 pgs w/ color & bw illustrations. This catalogue complements Christiane Baumgartner's first major museum exhibition in the U.S. and offers an in-depth introduction to the artist's work at mid-career. Baumgartner is best known for monumental woodcuts, handcarved prints that literally and conceptually expand the traditional boundaries of the medium beyond expectation. Leipzig-based artist Christiane Baumgartner (b. 1967) works at the intersection of old and new media to expand the conceptual and technical capacities of printmaking. Sourcing images from cinema and TV or from her own photographs and videos, she hand-carves woodcuts that defy convention and expectation. Often monumental in scale or undertaken in large series, the work is about speed and transmission, about human sight and its elusive capture, about cultural memory and modes of representation. Essays contextualise the work in relation to German printmaking and the Leipzig school; an interview with the artist surveys her praxis at mid-career. Exhibition: Davis Museum at Wellesley College, Wellesley, USA (21.9. - 16.12.2018). VG+ (light bumping, curling to corners.).…
