The cover and illustrations are by Caithnesian artist Sonas McClean. In June 1985 Brian Plummer experienced a severe coronary which ultimately caused him to leave the teaching profession in August 1986. His account of building a new life in the Highlands, of farming an adder-strewn 3 1/2 acre patch of land, of living by hunting rabbits, of his fishing of crabs and lobsters and ultimately sea netting, is both graphic and heartrendering. He learns to conquer his disability, and begins to live a strange and almost savage life style along the sea coast between Scotland and the Orkney.
