Añadir al carritoStated First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 438 pages; Description: xvii, 438 p. : ill., maps ; 24 cm. Subject: African Americans -- History. Summary: Synopsis: Ordinary people don't experience history as it is taught by historians. They live across the convenient chronological divides we impose on the past. The same people who lived through the Civil War and the eradication of slavery also dealt with the hardships of Reconstruction, so why do we almost always treat them separately? In this groundbreaking new book, renowned historian Thomas C. Holt challenges this form to tell the story of generations of African Americans through the lived experience of the subjects themselves, with all of the nuances, ironies, contradictions, and complexities one might expect. Building on seminal books like John Hope Franklin's From Slavery to Freedom and many others, Holt captures the entire African American experience from the moment the first twenty African slaves were sold at Jamestown in 1619. Each chapter focuses on a generation of individuals who shaped the course of American history, hoping for a better life for their children but often confronting the ebb and flow of their civil rights and status within society. Many familiar faces grace these pages - Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, and Barack Obama - but also some overlooked ones. Figures like Anthony Johnson, a slave who bought his freedom in late seventeenth century Virginia and built a sizable plantation, only to have it stolen away from his children by an increasingly racist court system. Or Frank Moore, a WWI veteran and sharecropper who sued his landlord for unfair practices, but found himself charged with murder after fighting off an angry white posse. Taken together, their stories tell how African Americans fashioned a culture and identity amid the turmoil of four centuries of American history. 1 Kg.

Very Near Fine in Fine DJ: The Book shows only a bit of crimping to the heel of the backstrip; else flawless; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. The DJ is flawless; the price has not been clipped; mylar-protected. Virtually 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 202pp. Hardback with DJ. In this follow up to his previous book on Hubbert's Peak/Peak Oil, Deffeyes gives us some engrossing info on such subjects as the Alberta tar sands, the Green River oil shale and nuclear power. Out of all the peak oil books I've read so far, this one is the only one that gives a very concise and knowledgable summary on these and other "alternatives" to cheap oil. Most other peak oil writers aren't old school geologists with hydrocarbon strings pumping in their veins instead of blood, so you don't get the feeling they really know what they are talking about. Several books I've read casually dismiss the Alberta tar sands and the Green River oil shale and shouldn't. Deffeyes doesn't. I'm actually a bit more hopeful and optimistic about the world's energy future after reading this book. First Edition; First Printing indicated.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Clean, tight, unmarked; light wear to upper edge of dust jacket; small mark inside front cover; number written on back facing end paper; otherwise very minimal wear; J. Robert Oppenheimer earned the title of "the father of the atomic bomb" from the role he played as Director of the Scientific Laboratory at Los Alamos. Kipphardt's play, which conveys the tension and conflict of that secret hearing, is a play for the theatre, not an assemblage of documentary material. He uses the facts taken from the published transcript to present some fundamental issues which face the world today - the conflict between the responsibility of the individual (above all the nuclear physicist) to his country and to humanity as a whole, the right of the patriot to express views at odds with those of his government without his loyalty being called into question.
