As with any influential nation, England's early development was tumultuous and fraught with peril~never more so than during the period of its own conquest and colonization, when Britain became a battleground for powerful armies and a playing field for powerful ideals. The story begins with the Roman invasion and occupation in 55 B.c., and the establishment of the Imperial order. The eventual erosion of Roman authority and the incursion of the Germanic tribes from Europe follows. One of the most useful chapters in the book outlines the differences between the several, autonomous Saxon kingdoms, and their eventual unification. Among the reasons for this development, the author focuses on three: the rapid spread of Christianity throughout the realm; the menace of a common Viking enemy; and the rise of a singular leader, Alfred the Great. The history of the island takes a dramatic turn after 1000 A.D., when strong claims to the English throne were made by a number of contending royal families. The most forceful claim issued from Normandy, and was backed up by invasion. The Making of England astutely analyzes not only the political importance of William the Conqueror's ascendancy, but the impact of Norman feudalism on the social and legal destiny of the British people as well. The three centuries of relative stability that followed his death were often threatened by dynastic intrigues. (The reign of Henry II is the great example.) These complicated "family relations" ultimately led to the deposing of Richard II in 1399 by Henry Bolingbroke ~crowned Henry IV. The advent of this new, Lancastrian regime ends the book, but points toward the gruesome conflict ahead, the Wars of the Roses. Moving beyond the confines of a mere chronological summation of facts, historian C. Warren Hollister conjures up the exciting political drama of British history. Within a narrative framework, he manages to capture all of the precipitous clashes of personality, all of the pettiness and grandeur of England in the making.

The Knights Templar were an order of soldier monks bound by religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, who engaged in religious war in the Holy Land. The Templar myth can be tied to a single incident in crusading history: the story of the trial, persecution, and fall of the Knights Templar. At the end of the thirteenth century the Templars became the apparently innocent victims of a terrible campaign of slander and persecution mounted against them by the French government. Many were tortured, others were burned alive in order to intimidate the rest into confession. Throughout the trials the unifying factors in the Templar story were accusations of magic and sorcery. It was by these accusations that the Knights Templar were transformed from ignorant, obedient servants of an oppressive ideal into enlightened magician~heroes of freedom and knowledge. The Templar trials and persecution only lasted a short period (1307~12) but in the end the Templar order was dissolved forever. The Murdered Magicians is both the history of the Knights Templar as it is thought to have occurred, in fact, and an account of the beliefs invented about the Templars in early and modern times.

(see photos for the table of contents on the rear cover). ~ "THIS VOLUME,'' to quote the Publisher's Note which prefaces this collection of essays, "is a distillation of five different books on music by Romain Rolland, all of them now out of print and three of them out of circulation for about three decades. It embraces some of the finest writing on music by Rolland; and, perhaps as an inevitable corollary, it represents some of the best musical writing of our generation. "Few writers on music anywhere and in any period brought to their task Rolland's seemingly inexhaustible reservoir of culture, his immense musical scholarship, his sensitive understanding of the psychology of genius, his enviable, possibly unique, gift for making past epochs and musical personalities long~dead live palpitantly and vividly for us. That such treasurable writing on music should be out of the reach of the average music lover~that, indeed, so many music lovers of our day should be unaware of its very existence ~ seemed an insufferable situation crying for remedy." WHEN Rolland writes about some of the famous composers of the past ~Gluck, Handel, Berlioz, Wagner, Hugo Wolf, Saint~Saens ~ he brings such new illumination to his subject that music and composers long familiar to us acquire new subtle meanings. Composers less well~known ~Telemann, Gretry, Lully, for example~are revived so that not only their personalities but their music as well suddenly become aglow with life, and vibrantly contemporary. Striking, too, are Rolland's several~dimensional personal portraits of Lully and Handel, and of Beethoven in his thirtieth year; unforgettable, his imperishable musical tours to eighteenth~century Italy and Germany. And whether Rolland dissects a piece of music, recreates an epoch, or draws a profile of great composers, he brings to his writings that poetic and eloquent style that earned for him the Nobel Prize in literature. Indeed, these essays on music are not only for the sensitive music lover, who will find his musical experiences and backgrounds enriched by reading them, but also for everyone who treasures great literature.
