Paperback. Condición: Good. Bruce?s Baby (1979) by John Butterworth H. E. Walter | ISBN: 0854790179 Condition: Good As sold by Crappy Old Books There are books with titles that explain themselves immediately, and then there are books like Bruce?s Baby , which arrives sounding faintly affectionate, slightly mysterious, and entire…ly capable of referring either to a beloved child, a treasured machine, or some highly specific enthusiasm best understood by those already in the know. As with many good older books, part of the pleasure lies in the intrigue before one has even opened it. Published in 1979 by H. E. Walter , this is very much the sort of title that carries the atmosphere of a particular world and a particular readership: the kind of book produced because somebody cared enough about the subject to set it down properly, and because somewhere there existed readers who would know exactly why it mattered. Such books are often far more interesting than grander, more commercially polished productions, not least because they tend to preserve passions, obsessions, and corners of life the mainstream leaves politely alone. The title itself is wonderfully suggestive. ?Bruce?s Baby? has the ring of something cherished, laboured over, talked about endlessly, and probably defended against criticism with a touch more feeling than strict objectivity would allow. We have all known such ?babies? in life: projects, creations, machines, schemes, and personal monuments that become extensions of their maker?s identity. There is something very human in that, and something immediately appealing. One suspects this is not a book about indifference. Books from this sort of niche publishing tradition often possess a special charm because they are close to their subject. They have not been ironed flat by committees or padded out for airport retail. They tend instead to retain the original pulse of enthusiasm: the sense that this mattered enough to be written down, printed, and passed on. Whether approached as history, memoir, hobbyist literature, or period curiosity, that sincerity gives such volumes a life of their own. There is also, naturally, a quiet irony in the way titles like this age. In 1979, Bruce?s Baby may have spoken very directly to its intended audience, who would have nodded wisely and known precisely what was under discussion. Decades later it acquires an extra layer of charm, becoming not only a book in itself but also a small relic of a time when publishers were perfectly content to assume the world did not need everything explained in the subtitle. A commendable confidence. The late 1970s were, in any case, fertile ground for this kind of practical or enthusiast-driven publishing: books with personality, specificity, and a complete lack of interest in modern branding language. They have a solidity to them, both physical and intellectual. They were made to be bought by people who actually wanted them, not by algorithms hoping for engagement metrics. One rather misses that. This copy is in good condition , which seems entirely appropriate. It has the honest, serviceable feel of a book that has lived a little without coming to grief: read, kept, and now ready for another appreciative owner. Good copies of these more unusual titles often have a particular appeal, because they combine usability with the pleasure of possessing something not everyone else has tripping off the shelf. A fine item for collectors of niche non-fiction, specialist publishing, and the endlessly entertaining byways of twentieth-century print culture. Bruce?s Baby has exactly the sort of title and presence that make second-hand bookselling worthwhile: distinctive, a little enigmatic, and full of the promise that someone, somewhere, once cared about this very much indeed.
