Añadir al carritokart. (paperpack). Condición: Gut. second edition. 413 pp, numerous ill. Good and clean copy, cover with some traces of wear. Minimal corner bump. - The Dada Painters and Poets offers the authentic answer to the question "What is Dada?" This incomparable collection of essays, manifestos, and illustrations was prepared by Robert Motherwell with the collab- oration of some of the major Dada figures: Marcel Duchamp, Jean Arp, and Max Ernst among others. Here in their own words and art, the principals of the movement create a composite picture of Dada - its convictions, antics, and spirit. First published in 1951, this treasure trove remains, as Jack Flam states in his foreword to the second edition, "the most comprehensive and important anthology of Dada writings in any language, and a fascinat- ing and very readable book." It contains every major text on the Dada movement, including retrospective studies, personal memoirs, and prime examples. The illustrations range from photos of participants, in characteristic Dadaist attitudes, to facsimiles of their productions. / Contents: Acknowledgments -- Foreword by Jack Flam -- Preface -- Introduction, by Robert Motherwell -- List of Illustrations -- I. Añadir al carritoCloth with dust jacket. Condición: Sehr gut. Second printing. X, 159 p. Der Buchrücken ist lichtbedingt minimal verfärbt, ansonsten ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar ohne Anstreichungen. The spine is minimally discolored due to light, otherwise a very good and clean copy without markings. -- Contents - Canto I - Canto II - Canto III - Canto IV - Canto V - Canto VI - Canto VII - Canto VIII - Canto IX - Canto X - Canto XI - Canto XII - Selected Bibliography -- (publisher's blurb:) Edmund Spenser's art is intricate, intel- lectual, fanciful, and, finally, magnificent. Spenser is enshrined as one of the great English writers, and Book One of The Faerie Queene is regularly taught in colleges, not only in advanced courses but also in introductory surveys. Many teachers as well as students, however, find the poem baffling and know of no way to approach it except as an allegory whose several levels of meaning must be deciphered. Mark Rose offers a reading of the poem as poetry, savoring the language and tracing Spenser's vision. This close study of Book One follows the poem as it develops canto by canto. Rather than expound the meaning of the poem, Mark Rose attempts to draw the meaning out of the text while helping the reader respond freshly to the emotion, humor, grace, and humanity of the poem and conveying a sense of its richness and subtlety. Specialists will find many new insights in Spenser's Art, though the book is not addressed primarily to them; teachers who are not experts on Spenser will find it especially rewarding. Mark Rose is Professor of English at the University of Illinois, Urbana. He is author of Heroic Love, Shakespearean Design, and Golding's Tale, a novel. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Jacket after John Sell Cotman Ilustrador. 1st Edition. Stated first edition, first impression. Some very slight edge wear to top of spine, very slight bruising to corners, otherwise in 'as new' condition, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unread. 334pp. The monarchs of seventeenth century Europe put a surprisingly high priority on the abolition of dueling, seeing its eradication as an important step from barbarism toward a rational state monopoly on justice. But it was one thing to ban dueling and another to stop it. Duellists continued to kill each other with swords or pistols in significant numbers well into the nineteenth century. In 1883 Maupassant called dueling the last of our unreasonable customs. As a dramatic and forbidden ritual from another age, the duel retained a powerful hold on the public mind and, in particular, the literary imagination. Many of the greatest names in Western literature wrote about or even fought in duels, among them Corneille, Moliere, Richardson, Rousseau, Pushkin, Dickens, Hugo, Dumas, Twain, Conrad, Chekhov, and Mann. As John Leigh explains, the duel was a gift as a plot device. But writers also sought to discover in duels something more fundamental about human conflict and how we face our fears of humiliation, pain, and death. The duel was, for some, a social cause, a scourge to be mocked or lamented, yet even its critics could be seduced by its risk and glamour. Some conservatives defended dueling by arguing that the man of noble bearing who cared less about living than living with honor was everything that the contemporary bourgeois was not. The literary history of the duel, as 'Touche' makes clear, illuminates the tensions that attended the birth of the modern world.
