Story told by Sendak: Initially banned because of Mickey's visible naked penis, Sendak called his friend, Philip Roth, who's Portnoy's Complaint had also been banned in the same year. I have personally checked this BOOK out with Sendak expert/author, Joyce Hanrahan (Works of Maurice Sendak) and she declared it a true first edition explaining that the Library of Congress catalog number was issued in November 1963, therefore on the first printings in 1964, but not thereafter. Because the DJ is not a first issue, I have priced it accordingly. Still the best children's book ever written and illustrations are stunning.
