Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Unique in the market for its breadth of coverage and depth of analysis, this uncommonly readable new book by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas K. McCraw is destined to become a classic supplementary text in a variety of undergraduate as well as graduate courses and seminars. Five of the book's ten chapters provide deft examinations of representative companies and the remarkable people who led them. The firms considered include McDonald's, Procter & Gamble, Boeing, General Motors, and Ford - all of which began as entrepreneurial startups and grew to become big businesses - their success stories counterbalanced by a detailed dissection of the monumental failure of RCA, long the world leader in consumer electronics but now all but extinct.Unforgettable portraits of dazzling entrepreneurs such as Henry Ford, Alfred Sloan of General Motors, David Sarnoff of RCA, and Ray Kroc of McDonald's are supplemented by lucid sketches of a cast of less famous but equally fascinating characters such as: 'Doc' Smelser, the eccentric economics Ph.D. who for 34 years headed Procter & Gamble's world-renowned Market Research Department; Mary Kay Ash, who built a cosmetics empire through the force of her own energy, originality, and generosity to her sales force; Ferdinand Eberstadt, the tough, hard-driving genius of American mobilization during World War II; and June Martino, whose crucial contribution as 'Vice-President of Equilibrium' at McDonald's was rewarded by the gift of 10 percent of the company's common stock. Interspersed with the company-centered chapters are five brief 'overview' chapters - one each on women and African Americans in business, and three on vital sectors of American business: first finance, then chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and, most recently, computers, Silicon Valley, and the Internet. Featuring thirty-five striking photographs and a completely up-to-date bibliographic essay, this compact, enjoyable work will be highly appreciated by all students of U.S. business history and the art of administration.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Riess examines the evolution of sport from its rural and urban origins as a less-than-respectable entertainment for the lower classes, through its antebellum upsurge when, with the development of a new sport ideology, it attained respectability - penetrating and finally remaking popular culture. Using a topical approach, Riess looks at sport from several vantage points, analysing the interaction between sport and the rise of modern cities; the impact of sport on immigration, race, class, and gender; how sport became accessible through technological innovations; how it became integral to various educational and social movements; the coming of the professional sports figure; sport's links to politics and organised crime; and, the role of women in sport. Highlighted with colourful anecdotes, the narrative unfurls a pageant of celebrities and unknowns, players, spectators, and entrepreneurs - all engaged in the drama that is American sport.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The first all-primary source reader in labour history published in nearly 100 years. This book presents excerpts from 54 primary sources to blend labour history's traditional focus on the growth of a union movement with windows into all aspects of workers' lives -- their workplaces, unions, home lives and culture -- the engaging sections mirroring the great diversity of the American workforce from their colonial era to the present. Arranged into 4 parts, each of which begins with an original overview of the corresponding period in American history, this unique compilation of edited documents -- each of which is preceded by a contextual introduction -- offers students the opportunity to explore for themselves how specific events as well as general trends in American labourers, slaves, servants, mill hands, prostitutes, assembly-line workers, office temps, fast-food employees, or union leaders. While its organisation and diverse range make it an excellent companion to the publisher's popular 'Labor in America' this book can also stand alone or serve as an engaging supplement for any course in labour or US history. …

Hardback. Condición: Fair. In a time when Catholic piety is often fixed on the Good Friday stations of the cross, and evangelical piety is associated with an imaginary what would Jesus do, and much of Protestant religion has slimmed Jesus down from the fully dimensioned Christology of the Gospels, and contemporary Christianity misses a Christ who has moved into the neighborhood (John 1:14) and fully engaged the world and its peoples, and touring liberals tout how little a Christian actually needs to believe, this book chooses fourteen episodes from Jesus' entire life and makes them way stations on a pilgrimage on which we gather to meet Jesus in person, share him in community, and follow him to a fully realized discipleship. Such way stations may recall the medieval imitation of Christ or the notion of a Christian pilgrimage during which we make the way by walking. Historically, pilgrimage is meant to evoke I want to be in that number. Yet identifying these stations is fully congruent with contemporary New Testament scholarship, whether liberal or historically orthodox. The significance of this book is that it sets forth a process of adult Christian education today that is rich with all the dimensions of Jesus' life, from birth to death and resurrection, with all the happenings in between. And most important, it turns adult Christian education into a compelling Bible study in community, and one that attracts participation like walking a labyrinth. Through such engagement it recovers for lively practice today the mostly forgotten medieval imitatio Christi and inserts this into the nearly forgotten but once vividly realized practice of pilgrimage, overdue today as a way of imprinting the Christian walk onto the culture and onto individual believers and their communities. Finally, it follows contemporary Gospel scholarship back to the historical Jesus, through visionary Holy Land tours or a modern walking the way stations that constitute Jesus' own life and our immersion in it that would constitute true discipleship. …
