From the earliest times it was subject to wave after wave of invaders ranging from the cultured and civilized Greeks to savage and barbarous nomad tribes. Its past is a kaleidoscope of peoples, cultures and religions which have shaped the subsequent history and civilization of this mountainous territory and have left their monuments in the land. In this fascinating yet scholarly book Mme Jeannine Auboyer, curator of a world famous French museum, has presented a panoramic account of the exciting and turbulent history of Afghanistan, and in her notes to the plates an enthralling commentary which illuminates the interrelation between this history and the cultural and artistic heritage of the country. The astonishing beauty as well as the diversity of the art are brilliantly and vividly shown in 150 magnificent plates by Dominique Darbois of which more than 40 are in full colour. Excavations at the site of Mundigak have revealed the prehistoric dawn of civilization in Afghanistan. The next major impulse came from the conquests of Alexander the Great and the Greek kingdoms which were the successor states to his empire, and Mme Auboyer has illustrated an interesting and very beautiful series of coins of Greek, Indo~Greek and Scythian rulers. Finds at Begram (Kapishi), such as Alexandrian glass and Hellenistic bronze offer further evidence of Greek and Roman influences, while during the same period ivories were imported from India. From India also came the Buddhist missionaries whose religion became the dominant one in Afghanistan for several centuries. This period saw the building of the great stupas at Guldara and Shevaki and the fabulous cliff monasteries of Foladi. From the seventh to ninth centuries the Indian influence is renewed as can be seen in sculptures obviously inspired by Hindu iconography, but in the following century the country succumbed to the attacks of Muslim invaders who in their turn established new dynasties of rulers. The great palace of Ghazni and the buildings of Herat from the Timurid age are only two examples of the Muslim art of this land, where so many civilizations and religions had left the imprint of their passage. In this book, the reader finds himself introduced to a hitherto little explored area of cultural history, the text and pictures provide an exciting commentary on the interaction of Asian and European civilizations on each other at their frontiers, but above all, the works of art themselves are not only fascinating and unusual, but often of breathtaking beauty.
